Explorer application error on shutdown

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Dave, Nov 24, 2008.

I get an explorer.exe application error every time I shutdown. The error is
"The instruction at 0x761d84fd referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory
    could not be read."
The address (for example 0x761d84fd) varies.
Any ideas how to eliminate this error? Thanks.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
    Web pages, including HijackThis.
    Help with malware:
    All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
    of.

Mr. Ferguson, thanks for pointing me to the sfc.

I ran the sfc and opened the file. This is what was in the sfcdetails.txt
    file:

2008-11-24 18:25:51, Info CSI 000000ea [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:25:55, Info CSI 000000ec [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:26:49, Info CSI 0000010a [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:26:53, Info CSI 0000010c [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:29:11, Info CSI 0000015f [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:29:11, Info CSI 00000161 [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:29:11, Info CSI 00000163 [SR] Cannot repair
2008-11-24 18:29:11, Info CSI 00000168 [SR] Cannot repair

These look like memory locations and not files. The sfc instructions don't
say anything about memory, just how to replace files.
    What's next?

  4. SFC does not handle memory locations. If you feel its some memory error you
might try turning off Virtual Memory and restarting to turn it back on
    again.

Control Panel, System, Tasks pane, click "Advanced System Settings",
Advanced tab, Performance area, Settings button, Advanced tab, Change
button, 'no paging file' radio button, OK.

The same thing was happening to me. I went through every step you
mentioned about turning off Virtual Memory and then restarting. The
error message appears again. Then after it was restarted, I see what
happens when I shut down the computer. It would say:
"The instruction at 0x767c84fd referenced memory at 0x00000000."

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
