DISASTER - VISTA - a NEW PROBLEM and this TIME IT'S CRITICIAL

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Malke, Jun 8, 2009.

  1. I already explained it has NOTHING todo with network.
I can Google also! It's not about ACK Window autotuning used by Ethernet
    networks.

It's an internal harddisk copy to external harddisk via USB2. It has todo
with flawed Interface, and MAY be with actual copy itself.
I hope it's just a monkey interface (appearance) and copy itself proceeds
OK, but... when you're forced to close eyes to avoid seeing offensive
Progress bar convulsions form left to right and lying about days remaining
to copy merely a few Gigabytes, it's impossible to tell whether appearance
or actual code running behind filecopy function is/are flawed.

I used to see steady progress on WindowsXP without bumps up/down in
    transmission speed in Vista.

  2. Vista Ultimate 32-bit on HP dvSeries laptop.
SP1 cannot be applied due to offending hardware component - Conexant DSP
chipset (in plain English - audio, modem, etc. are controlled by this
    chipset).
Since SP1 is a prerequisite for SP2, the laytter cannot be applied either.

Finally, the hotfix MS published for a similar problem was for the
machine-to-machine filecopy failing over the Network, due to Vista's flawed
    ACK window autotuning.
The "window" here means a time span within which segments of bitstream are
    being acknolwdged
It's too technical and you wouldn't care, the bottom line that hotfix is for
what appears similar yet different problem.
My problem is ProgressBar & more importantly "Calculating Time Remaining"
make heavy-duty file copy a problem which annoys me to no end because it's
not a photo viewer, appearance, or another cosmetic issue. File copy is a
fundamental function of any OS. You can screw up many things but not this
    one.

A copy within same physical disk, whether it be same or sifferent partitions
on that disk, is FINE or maybe I havne't done it too often to notice
    problems.
With Vista I became mentally conditioned to expect problems in areas I
    haven't used & tested extensively.
The problem is with pumping numerous files totalling 2-20GB (I never had a
file longer than 16GB, but it may happen in future, by that time hopefully
    WIndows7 will be better).
It's stuck calculating "time remaining" and then lies blatantly about days
and weeks needed to finish files copy, which in itself is not critical - i
can close my eyes and be confident it will take less than 15-40 minutes, as
I learned to estimate copy based on filesize & transmission medium (USB2 to
5400 rpm external HDD in this case).

I am expecting 16-22MBps I was getting from this harddisk on WindowsXP, and
    between sectors of internal HDD.
What I am getting is jump to 3MBps, down to Kbps, again to 3MBps and so on.
It's being interrupted continuously due to multiple files seek, or whatever.

Look, let me cut off technical language and just state this:
GOOGLE for this problem and discover how many people complained about Vista
inferiority versus XP in terms of file processing.

I am just one of those who decided to take it directly to MS Newsgroups, I
am asking to make Windows7 less stupid please.
Give us WinXP performance back + Vista security but so that owners can relax
    security.

I already deleted MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, etc and for that I had to go
thru loads of Ownership & Permissions tweaking.
i am now 100% owenr of all folders, call me insane but I am in control now.
Just a week passed, i solved many Vista problems.

This is my next problem - file copy in Gigabyte range. Yesterday I pumped
80GB in one shot, to give you a glimpse of what kind of work I perform, it's
    not games or movie watching.
