    TL; DR.

If you have a question, short and concise will get you an answer.

If you just want to rant, this isn't the venue. A social gathering or
    website would be better.

Don't like Vista? Use something else. This isn't Microsoft you're talking to
    here.

So use XP or Ubuntu or both. Have you checked the file transfer rate

You may say so when you are employed by the company and put in charge of
    managing these newsgroups.

Do you know exactly how they collect feedbacks from ALL channels and you are
absolutely sure that no one from the company will read feedbacks from here
    (just because they don't reply?)?

Before that, remove your signature will be a good start for
    self-demonstration.

PS: I try not to comment on your signature but seems to me that you have
    very little tolerance for others.

This is a Usenet newsgroup, for all intents and purposes, although it does
bear the name "microsoft". I think that Microsoft actually started these
groups on their server, but that later Google and all the nntp servers took
them over too. They did this on the off chance that someone would get help
here and not have to call technical support.

Vista has so many screw-ups that people are habituated to it. Putting
"disaster" and "critical" in the subject line even in all caps is sure to
generate a level 1 "ho-hum" response from anyone reading it.

    Cheers,

    Earle

  5. You can tolerate Search, Appearances , etc nuissances I've complained here
    about.

However today morning I discovered the mother of all inferiorities of Vista
    vs. WindowsXP.
It turns out it's incapable of one of the fundamental - BASIC tasks
    Operating System must perform.
FILE COPY/MOVE/DELETE takes ages, progress bar is lying, "Calculating Time
Remaining" - you should see that dialogbox, it's spells death to
productivity, it borders on the level of completely unusuable OS in our
environment where we move 20-50GB/day on my CAD laptop Hilarious! Why
has God punished me so that WinXP disk was missing and I installed this joke
OS expecting an "upgraded" exprience?? I wish I could
    ascreenshots/pictures.
Please don't refer me to the known Vista "Network Autotuning" bugfix, I am
not even copying over the network, it's an external USB2 Harddisk that used
to take seconds to pump fairly large files, specificlaly it achieved
    15-22MBps transfer rates.
Vista humps along at maximum 2-3MBps, then stumbles into the range of KBps
and calculating GODDAMN TIME REMAINING or lying progress bar, then goes back
to 2-3MBps, then again down to KBps range.

I'm still wasting huge amounts of my time while I wait for Vista to
calculate the time remaining before even starting to transfer files.
I'm just absolutely flabergasted because File processing is one of the
basics OS should master. You can live with crooked volume control or
failing search - buy 3d party, but not for thsi critical task. I have no
desire to lose even one bit because $35-50000 software license depends on
it, when we work with CAD documents.
    Honestly...This is outrageous.

it has nothing todo with another reported bug with Network filecopy, which
is due to retarded Vista Autotuning feature, it should be disabled.

That is what is suppose to happen and did under XP. Thus the purpose
of the progress bar which is to roughly show the transfer process and
time remaining. Now the knuckleheads in Redmond have so bungled the
file copy/move/delete routine you get the moronic "calculating time
remaining" message which often hangs on the screen, with nothing
apparently happening (is though) then in the last couple seconds the
status bar sometimes zooms left to right, obviously not reflecting
anything but legendary Microsoft stupidity from their inept
    programmers.

Two NEW things happen in Vista. It check permissions and I suspect
sniffs for DRM (Digital Rights Management) violations at the behest of
the Hollywood crowd. Add in that it can open an absurd number of
handles to process the task, no wonder it often bogs down. That
something is seriously wrong can be confirmed by moving a few files
totaling 1 GB or so, then trying to copy/move a few hundred files
totally the same amount. Generally it will take MUCH longer in the
second example. This confirms the routine is poorly written and is
wading through needless layers of bloated code.

  7. I don't have time to sit on the computer for weeks, so I need to stick with
Vista, the reason XP cannot be used here is because disk was lost.
It was an emergency, a virus, system overhaul and XP disk was not found, I
ran to a local retailed and all they had were Vistas.

Normally I get software from ZipZoomFly as OEM (requires hardware purchase),
in this case waiting for shipment wasn't an option.

This i show I ended up with Vista.

Problem is Progress Bar is lying, why is it zooming left and right and
claims I have 17 days remaining to copy 32 files totalling 4GB? This is
    outrageous.
I am happy it actually finishes copy sooner than 17 days, but what is the
    circus with Progress Bar?
This is a commercial OS, with the basic file copy interface which looks as
if it were an Abortion gone wrong.

Hey bozo...which version of Vista are you running and did you install
    all updates, including SP2?

  9. Seriously, what is this circus with progress Bar zooming left & right, and
warning 17 days remaining to copy 32 files worth of 4GB?
How can thi sve so screwed comparing to WindowsXp which at least both
achieved filecopy in reasonable time and didn;t lie to me about 2 weeks or
data xfer rate of mere 2MBps?

I can achieve 16Mbps wghen copying a single file of 1GB+, problem is with
smaller yet multiple files, once Vista encounters multiple file copy it is a
    disaster.
I achieved 21Mbps with anothger portable harddisk, so not too bad but the
problem is with smaller files when they're multiple.
This is not the case with WinXP.

I just can;t stand Progress bar lying to me, I liekd WinXP APPROXIMATELY
informing me of time remaining, Vista made a circus out of "calculating time
    remaining".
it takes time to calculate, isntead of actual job!
Them after it wasted enough time, it maanages to LIE about time remaining!

It's a double stupidify. First waste time, then provide incorrect
estimation that's not off by 5-10 minutes as was WinXP, but by days.

  10. There was a problem with the release version of Vista when copying files
to/from a network drive. That problem was all but eliminated with service
pack 1. With service pack 2 it is even better.

So, what service pack revision are you running?

Personally I have never seen this problem, nor have I have to solve for it
on the many computers I have worked on in the past 2 1/2 years. But the
problem does/did exist for some. On the whole the problem seems to be non
existent at this point if you are properly patched.

    Hi,

Thanks for the explanations and I was referring to their servers. There are
evidences suggesting messages/posts are being monitored in some form (e.g.
certain posts were deleted) but I cannot be totally sure.

    > Vista has so many screw-ups that people are habituated to it. Putting
    > "disaster" and "critical" in the subject line even in all caps is sure to
    > generate a level 1 "ho-hum" response from anyone reading it.

I won't be surprised if someone like "the" Frank replied with what were
posted. But a professional (if their title means it) can chose to ignore it
or to provide any applicable explanations and/or solutions.

Also, it's a common practice for marketing to collect feedbacks from various
channels even though they may not reply to the messages depending on each
company's policy, delegation, and so on.

Furthermore, I won't be surprised for the company is paying extra attention
to feedbacks related to Vista (rants or not) BEFORE the official launch of
Windows 7 so that they may still have time to do any necessary last-minute
fix to ensure a successful and smooth product launch.

It will be the most foolish thing, excuse my language, to do at this time,
or any other time, for attempting to seal the mouth of a customer/user
because their ego cannot bear for a different voice.

You see how the replies from some MVPs are very similar to "the" Frank's?
Maybe he will become one in the future because of his "loyalty" :p

Interesting. All of my Vista machines got slow as molasses on any network
printing operation after a recent update. This is SP1 plus a whole lot of
updates. I solved the problem by getting my wife a local printer and
putting W7 RC on my two computers.

Err Malke is NOT employed by Microsoft. and MVPs do NOT "manage" these
    newsgroups.

Even the most patient of people tend to lose it when they try to help
someone that turns out to be a moron. I think the MVP's have shown
commendable restraint dealing with this troll, and it has nothing to do with
    being a Vista fanboi.

What a total sack-of-**** you are. You're nothing but a moronic troll who
has trouble keeping up with your own lies. How old did you say you were?
Oh. That's right! You claim you've been using Windows since you saw it on
    Xerox's drawing board. Riiiiight......

Richard, to properly 'patch' this moron would require illegal surgery.
    Think Frankenstein.

  19. I went off medication

  20. Vista Ultimate 32-bit on HP dvSeries laptop.
SP1 cannot be applied due to offending hardware component - Conexant DSP
chipset (in plain English - audio, modem, etc. are controlled by this
    chipset).
Since SP1 is a prerequisite for SP2, the laytter cannot be applied either.

Finally, the hotfix MS published for a similar problem was for the
machine-to-machine filecopy failing over the Network, due to Vista's flawed
    ACK window autotuning.
The "window" here means a time span within which segments of bitstream are
    being acknolwdged
It's too technical and you wouldn't care, the bottom line that hotfix is for
what appears similar yet different problem.
My problem is ProgressBar & more importantly "Calculating Time Remaining"
make heavy-duty file copy a problem which annoys me to no end because it's
not a photo viewer, appearance, or another cosmetic issue. File copy is a
fundamental function of any OS. You can screw up many things but not this
    one.

A copy within same physical disk, whether it be same or sifferent partitions
on that disk, is FINE or maybe I havne't done it too often to notice
    problems.
With Vista I became mentally conditioned to expect problems in areas I
    haven't used & tested extensively.
The problem is with pumping numerous files totalling 2-20GB (I never had a
file longer than 16GB, but it may happen in future, by that time hopefully
    WIndows7 will be better).
It's stuck calculating "time remaining" and then lies blatantly about days
and weeks needed to finish files copy, which in itself is not critical - i
can close my eyes and be confident it will take less than 15-40 minutes, as
I learned to estimate copy based on filesize & transmission medium (USB2 to
5400 rpm external HDD in this case).

I am expecting 16-22MBps I was getting from this harddisk on WindowsXP, and
    between sectors of internal HDD.
What I am getting is jump to 3MBps, down to Kbps, again to 3MBps and so on.
It's being interrupted continuously due to multiple files seek, or whatever.

Look, let me cut off technical language and just state this:
GOOGLE for this problem and discover how many people complained about Vista
inferiority versus XP in terms of file processing.

I am just one of those who decided to take it directly to MS Newsgroups, I
am asking to make Windows7 less stupid please.
Give us WinXP performance back + Vista security but so that owners can relax
    security.

I already deleted MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, etc and for that I had to go
thru loads of Ownership & Permissions tweaking.
i am now 100% owenr of all folders, call me insane but I am in control now.
Just a week passed, i solved many Vista problems.

This is my next problem - file copy in Gigabyte range. Yesterday I pumped
80GB in one shot, to give you a glimpse of what kind of work I perform, it's
    not games or movie watching.
