Ok...I have a HP desktop running Vista premium. I "had" an Emachine that ran
XP, but it died. (I think the power supply went out) Whatever the case I am
not going to get the XP computer fixed, but I do want some files off the old
harddrive out of it. How do I do that? I'm hearing of a USB adapter of some
sort that will do it...is that true? I went on Ebay, saw some USB's but am
not sure they will do what I need for them to do.

The "safer" method is to get an external "drive" enclosure and place
the XP drive into this "box." The driver then becomes a USB hard
drive and you can access the files, providing the drive "folder"
    structures are still working.

Personally, I would "avoid" eBay for this product. I am assuming that
you may have important files to save.

These are examples of how they look and what they cost: 'hdd enclosure
    - Search at Office Depot'

Are you familiar with External USB drives? Let me explain that such a
drive is nothing but a regular *internal* drive installed in a special
USB case. You can buy such a case retail (personally I would stay away
from eBay because I wouldn't want to run the risk of getting burnt by
a seller) for around $20-25. Putting the drive into such a case is
*extremely* easy, and even if you are all thumbs, almost certainly you
could do it in under five minutes.

After you have finished copying off the files you want, you then have
an external drive that you can use for any purpose you want--backups
    for example.
