cut and paste problem

I am having an issue with word and works word processor; I try to cut
and paste something and it either won't stay highlighted to cut/copy, it
will selectively highlight part of what I am trying to highlight or it
drags a few letters and the word gets jumbled up. I have no idea why but
it's acting haywire. I thought it my be my word but I tried works and it
does the same thing with it. I'm messing around with cutting and pasting
in this text as a test and it's not having any problems if that means
anything. Any suggestions? Thank you

What versions of Word and Works? Are you by any chance using a touchpad?
