when my pc starts up there is a message ---checking the system in C.Type of
file system NTFS, Volume Label is Vista.

then CHDSK is verfying files (stage 1 0f 3)
5% complete (70785 of 125952 file records processed)
After about 3mins the welcome to vista screen comes up and the windows
    programmes are open.
How do I stop this ocurring repeatedley??
    DavidA.

  2. Are you shutting down the computer in the recommended way?

    Start | Sleep -> | Shut Down

  4. Run chkdsk from an elevated command prompt window. Assuming that chkdsk was
testing drive/partition C: (you should be told which partition/drive was
    being checked) do the following:

Type chkdsk c: /f /r where C: is the partition where Vista is installed
    upon.

You will get a message that it can't run - would you like it to run during
the nest boot. Type Y and then press the enter key. Reboot!

It will take a long time as this is the most comprehensive test that chkdsk
    can perform.

If the test fails, or fails to complete (remember it takes a long time)
download the test utility from the manufacturer of the hard drive, not the
    computer manufacturer. Run their test.

If you still have problems - replace the hard drive.

It sounds like the "dirty bit" is stuck on, causing the hard drive to
go into chkdsk on every boot. This happened to me also. It was not my
primary partition so reformating the secondary drive "D" corrected the
    problem.

In a "run" or command prompt window type "chkntfs C:" This will tell
you if the dirty bit is always on.

Do a search on "reset dirty bit" and you should find some ways to
correct the problem. Formatting the drive may be the sollution of last
resort as the dirty bit is often a result of a Master Boot Record
    write error.
