can't log on - registry messed up

I know that these issues have been addressed in different posts, but I'm
having a hard time putting it all together and hope you don't mind
    revisiting this.

Satellite P205-S7476 / Vista / I have no recovery or boot disks

Hx: I messed up! I was having logon problems - I don't know exactly
what was going on other than I couldn't consistantly log in. I followed
a fix from the Microsoft site which modified the registry and I'm really
kicking myself...it's probably my fault, but I'm unable to log in now.
I don't have a record of exactly what I did to the file.

Problem: When I log in I get the message 'The Group Policy Client
service failed the logon. Access is denied'

I was told by a local tech company that I'd have to do a full system
restore, but I have a problem. I have my data backed up, but none of my
programs are available to me to be restored. All of my programs were
installed by IT at my office...and I was laid off in July, leaving me
with with no access to them (and no resources to purchase new ones!).

    My questions are:

Is there any way to correct this without wiping out everything on my
    disk?

If not, is there any way to transfer my program files to another
computer, then reinstall them when I'm up and running again?

Do I have to get a boot disk from Toshiba or are those files available
    anywhere?

I would appreciate any help you can offer...thank you very much!

    Susan

This person had ZoneAlarm problems like yours:

Can you get into safe mode and do the same ?

First of all those programs did not or ever belong to you. They are the Property of
your Employer that laid you off. Secondly open up under the Administrator user name
with no password(leave the field empty)
When open go to the Group Policy window and reset it to the default

Re: can't log on - my fault

Dave-UK - Thank you very much for your suggestion...unfortunately it
    didn't work.

Peter - Thank you to you as well. I'm unable to get in under the
Administrator name with no password...I get the same error message. I
am able to get in when I open the computer in safe mode and I went to
the Group Policy window but was unable to find default settings to
restore. I don't know if being in safe mode has anything to do with it.
I'm very aware that my former employer owns the programs, but they
generously allowed me to keep them when I left.

Thank you both, again. I'll keep at it.
