I lost my password and I only have 1 account. I can't get to the
interface that has the install. I have a Toshiba A200 Satellite laptop
with Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit, and if possible, I want to put XP
    on it.

Boot up from the XP CD and install from there. Vista won't let you install
    XP over itself.

    Hi,

Boot to Safe mode, logon to the administrator account available only there
and reset your user account password.

Before attempting to put XP on it make sure there are drivers available for
the proprietary hardware used in many laptops. Without them you may not be
able to install or use some of your laptop's features. If it is a sata
drive, you will most likely have to have a driver on floppy to feed to XP
setup (yes, it must be on a floppy, XP setup will not search any other
medium). Also, to install XP you will need to remove and rebuild the system
partition as it cannot install to a volume created by a Vista (it can read
it, but not install to it).

If you only had one administrative user account and you've forgotten the
password the first thing to try is to boot into Safe Mode. Do this by
repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get
you to the right menu where you can use your arrow key to select Safe Mode
[enter]. The built-in Administrator account is disabled by default in
Vista. However, if no other administrative accounts exist on the system it
may be enabled. If it is, you will see an icon for Administrator on the
Welcome Screen in Safe Mode. Log in (the password will be a blank) and then
go to Control Panel>User Accounts and change the password for your own user
account to something you will remember.

Doing all this requires a certain level of computer skills. You know
yourself best and whether taking the machine to a competent local computer
tech (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place) or a knowledgeable
friend is the better solution for you.

If you don't see the icon for the Administrator account in Safe Mode, then
the built-in Administrator account is still disabled.

You will need to use NTpasswd to change your administrative user's password
    to a blank.

Download the CD image (.iso) and burn as an image, not as data. You will
need third-party burning software. Then boot with the CD you created and
follow the directions. After you've finished with NTpasswd, remove the CD
and reboot the computer. Log into your administrative user's account, which
will no longer require a password.

General information about replacing Vista with XP:

    A. On an OEM (HP, Sony, etc.) computer:

    1. Go to the OEM's website and look for XP drivers for your specific model
computer. If there are no XP drivers, then you can't install XP. End of
story. If there are drivers, download them and store on a CD-R or USB
thumbdrive; you'll need them after you install XP.

    2. Check with the OEM - either from their tech support website or by calling
them - to see if you will void your warranty if you do this. If you will
void the warranty, you make the decision.

    3. If the OEM does support XP on the machine, call them and see if you can
have downgrade rights and have them send you an XP restore disk. This will
be far the easiest and best way of getting XP on the machine.

    4. If XP is supported on the machine but the OEM doesn't have an XP restore
disk for you, understand that you'll need to purchase a retail copy of XP
from your favorite online or brick/mortar store.

    5. Also understand that you will need to do a clean install of XP so if you
have any data you want, back it up first.

    6. If none of the above is applicable to you because you can't run XP on
that machine (see Item #1 above), return the computer and purchase one
    running XP instead.

    B. On a generic/home-built computer (from non-OEM company) - You will need
drivers for all your hardware. See the second link below for more details:

    - Clean Install How-To
    - What
    you will need on-hand
