I installed a Vista (32 bit) update and a Malicious software tool
update. After update installed allowed Vista to shutdown. Shutdown
achieved stage 3 of 3 configuring updates went into shutdown and now PC
just sits Shutting Down. I let it go for 18 hours and nothing. I
manually shut down the computer and it goes right to the stage 3 of 3
point and begins to shut down. I tried booting with last known stable
configuration and in safe mode but they all go right back to the stage
3-shutdown loop. Help how do I get out of this. I'd like to be able to
restore my computer to the day before I installed the updates but I
can't get the computer to boot up all the way. I have an Upgrade copy
of Vista which I understand isn't a bootable disk so I stuck. Any one
    have any suggestions?

Did you even try booting from the DVD?

I do have Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade Retail and I can boot from it.

Boot entirely into safe mode, rather than choose last good configuration.
Before you do anything be sure you have back-ups of your documents and
photos. You can do this from safe mode with networking.
See if system restore has a point prior to that update that you can revert
    to.
Failing that see if you can uninstall the upgrade from safe mode.
If you boot with your upgrade DVD and it identifies and offers to repair
your Vista installation at best you will go back to the condition of Vista
as it exists on the DVD, without subsequent upgrades. However if something
goes wrong all your files in the default Documents/Images sections of the OS
    can be wiped out.
