Can't delete "The... folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted."

Ok, when i click on a file to delete it, it comes up with this --->
"The... folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or
deleted."

I think I have deleted these files a while ago but when i search for
them they show up
as 0 bytes.

I tried - creating a new folder with the same name and putting those
files in and then deleting them, but doesn't work.
I tried Hijack this and delete on reboot, can't open as file does not
exist for deletion.

It can be that a rootkit (not such a good one) is hiding it. So... You best
bet is to download a rootkit hunter and scan your system. Also a process can
be blocking access to that folder. It can be resolved by killing that
process etc..

Run chkdsk /f to see if you have file system errors. This sounds like this
might be the cause...

Can you start Windows in Safe mode, into DOS mode an dmanually locate & see
what operations file will allow now, outside of Windows?

 

Can you browse to this file using Windows Explorer? If it is not there, and
the file shows up in search, you may have to refresh the search index. This
is done automatically in the background but if you use the computer
constantly, and then turn it off when you are done, the index "may" not be
refreshed accordingly.

Hi, Kevin.

We often see such complaints of files continuing to show up in a Search for
a while (several days?) after they have been deleted. This happens
sometimes if the computer is heavily used and has had little slack time for
Search to run in the background - or if the computer is always turned off
quickly when not being used for a foreground task.

If all else fails, I look for "missing" files/folders with the good old Dir
command from MS-DOS days in a Command Prompt window:
dir c:\<filename> /a /s

The "dir" lists all files and folders in the specified folder (formerly
known as a "directory"). The "c:\" specifies to start at the Root of Drive
C:. For <filename>, substitute the file or folder name that you are looking
for; use the "?" and "*" wildcards as needed. The /a parameter says to show
All files, even those with Hidden or System attributes. And the /s
parameter says to list files and folders in subfolders, too. If your "lost"
file does not show up in THIS listing, it is not anywhere on Drive C:. (So
look for it on Drive D: with dir d:\...)

Do they only show up in search? Or do you see them in other places
like Windows Explorer ?

 

Hey guys thank you for reply, I will try and let you guys know.
The files ONLY show up when I search for them.
and I cannot do anything with these files - move them, delete them,
rename them.
I just want to remove them.
and im still finding files from 3 months ago that i have deleted.

okay i managed to delete some files.
these are older files and then ones that i can't delete currently
I right clicked on one of the files, then properties, found the
location of them
went to the location and dragged the files from the search window into
the location
it created a folder which it used to belong inside.
i moved the file into this folder which has just been created.
and then i deleted the folder which contains this file.
problem solved. Gone for good when i refresh the search window.

HOWEVER, the more recent files which are supposedly located on the
desktop
but not visible. These files i tried the same method but they seem to
come back when i refresh the search window.

HOPEFULLY this would have helped some people struggling with the same
problem.
but more recent files still can't be deleted... any ideas?

click on start - type in index - click on indexing options - click on
advance - then click rebuild.

That's why I asked the question about "only visible through search".

Vista indexing is error prone and performance wasting. The search
interface is cumbersome, non-intuitive, and tuned to skip certain
files MS didn't think you should be looking at.

Instead of treating the symptoms as you have, try treating the
problem: disable the indexing service, Install Agent Ransack, and
don't use Vista search ever again.
