Cannot save a file

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Gordon Biggar, Jun 2, 2009.

  1. This should probably be a TurboTax question, but I have found the folks on
this forum to be much more savvy about technical questions!

I have TurboTax loaded on a 32-bit Vista laptop, and on a 64-bit Vista
desktop. I have edited the properties of the specific data files on both
platforms to disable the read-only attribute. There is no problem in saving
files from the 64-bit platform. But, when I attempt to save the same file
on the 32-bit platform, I receive the following software error message:
"Unable to save Tax Return. The file you are attempting to save is either
marked read only or is on a read only volume such as a CD."

I am relatively new to Vista. Is there something that I am missing in the
editing of the file properties of a data file that prevents me from
    over-writing that file?

Would you check the path to save that file. Sometimes the drive letter is
actually of a DVD drive or something like a SD which is write protected.

Sometimes you may have opened the file from a network drive either. You can
try to close turbotax and copy that specific file to your C drive. Check the
properties and make sure it is not read only. Then open turbotax and open
that file specifically. Make some changes and try to save it to your C
    drive.

Those steps are to prevent turbotax from openning a cached file or a file on
the network share or some kind of dependent file copy of the one on your
    other computer.
