most of the time for the past 2 weeks my PC will freeze but its not really frozen. for example if i move the mouse alot about a min later the pointer will be somewhere else on the screen. ive also noticed that when this semi freeze happens 2 of my 4 cores are maxed at 100% useage (i have a gadget on the side bar) while the mouse moves(teleports) this gadget wont update. also programs have started to hang for about 2min at random times ( I would just get the little loading circle if I hover over them) and then just start working again , specifically firefox windows live messenger and some times windows explorer. I have no idea what is causing so I could use a bit of help. Thanks in advance.

    Hi zap 5 and welcome

My first suspicion is a heat problem somewhere, after that I would think a Malware Issue.

so First can you give us a little more info Please, system Make and model, or if its custom built can you give us your specifications

second what Antivirus, Spyware, Firewall do you currently have installed and working.

and third, do you know how to go into the Bios and under PC Health can you find the temps, and voltages for us Please

You have an issue with one of the following:-
    HDD
    RAM
    CPU

I would suspect the RAM first as its easiest to check, then HDD and then CPU
The fact that 2 of your cores throttle would say that its the RAM because your CPU is using its cache to try and compensate which is why your cores woul throttle.

I was thinking that it was your RAM.
If your machine is hand built, how many sticks and what size RAM do you have? I'm guessing it is more than 1. If it's not handbuilt. Let us know the serial number of your machine and it's make/model if possible.

Ok, try taking one of the RAM slots out and see if it improves, if not then replace that stick and take the other out.
This would eliminate the RAM sticks being the problem.

    Hi zap5

This brings alarm bells ringing. Why do you not use an Anti virus program?

the way you run your system is up to you, but from a security point of view........... you are a serious problem waiting to happen.

No protection on a Windows machine? Be very careful.

I had a computer here with a similar problem. it would blue scree only once in a while. Well, it never blue screened for me. After having it for a few days, my friend told me that it only happened when he was playing Spider Solitair. So I played the game and after some time it blue screened.

i ran memtest available at Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool. You download this and burn the ISO file to a CD and then boot your computer from the CD and run the test. I had to let the test run for about 8 hours and it found a bad memory stick. I replaced the stick and the problem went away.

So if you think it's a memory problem, you can swap memory as previously suggested or you can run memtest. It's just an option, a tool for your comptuer toolbox.

It may seem that some of the replies may be harsh but even Microsoft acknowledges that defender is not a substitute for full antivirus and malware protection. It isn't really all that good with adware.

I would be very surprised if you are not already infected whether or not it is the cause of you current problem,

If you are looking for a good subscription service I would recommend esat Nod 32 otherwise Either Avast or Avira as antivirus.

If you look under the downloads tab at the top you will find a number of them as well as good antimalware programs. Note that much of the information given there is company info but you will also find links to download what you select.

been 4 days so far with only the 1 2gb stick in and no freezing, safe to assume my other ram stick was the problem?

So it would seem. At least the problem may be narrowed down. If you try the second stick alone in the same slot and you get a good result the problem may be with the slot on the MOBO and not the RAM itself. Not as likely but very possible.

Glad to hear that zap5. New RAM is a lot easier than a MOBO problem. Glad we can be of help and hope you do not become a stranger.

    This issue is, happily, solved.

Damn! What is the situation when it froze. One RAM stick in the same slot as before?
