Backing up the registry

Microsoft recommends using systempropertiesprotection for backing up
the registry. Presumably, this backs up the registry to the hard
    drive.

I think that it might be a good idea to have an external backup as
well (CD-R). But how can one obtain this from
systempropertiesprotection? If not, can you suggest a method?

    Thanks

You asked the same question on 5th Sept 09.
    Don't you read replies?
    Here's my answer again:

" To backup the registry I use Erunt:

This program needs to be run as Admin to backup the registry.
It also has a daily backup routine (default 30 day cycle, but adjustable) but this
will only work with UAC disabled.
(To instigate a daily backup with UAC enabled you can create a task in Task Scheduler.) "

    Run regedit.

    File>>Export then select the destination.

According the the author of ERUNT, that is not adequate:

"The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) for
making a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the
whole registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive
is saved), nor can the exported file be used later to replace the
current registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file,
it is merged with the current registry without deleting anything that
has been added since the export, leaving you with an absolute mess of
    old and new entries."

I recommend using ERUNT to back up the registry. If you want to, you
can simply burn the file ERUNT creates to a CDR.

    Hi,

What do you think of the 'systempropertiesprotection' method?

    Thanks

Sorry, I have no experience with it and no comments. But Erunt is
free, works very quickly, and works very well. I've used it for
years, and I continue to recommend it.
