Sorry Stan, how is what I said the wrong answer?

You're not even thoughtful enough to quote in what you're reply to.

He asked if he wasted money going for 4GB. The answer is "basically yes"
nobody tried to qualify how much money. Without more information, like if
it was extra money over 2GB for example, or 3GB its hard to say how much
    money.

  2. You can get 4GB here for $30 generic (PNY), or $40 for elite (Corsair, QCZ,
Mushkin), or something in between (Kingston, Micron?).
If you look hard, e.g. at Newegg (I used to deal with Egghead before it went
    out of business?), Amazon, ZipZoomFly)

And yes even for a laptop, I got 4GB Corsairs (2+2GB) for $40 at Amazon.com
Out of 4GB you get 3.25GB usable space, what is the waste?
A few cents? And would even $10 be painful to lose for RELIABILITY because
4GB is more stable than 3GB due to assymetry (1+3 versus 2+2GB)?

    Not a waste of money.
A sandwich costs $6 in midtown Manhattan, so memory is like dirt - a few
sandwiches that serve you for several years and you can be satsified having
    memory MAXED OUT for $40.
And not everyone has to shoot for the best like myself (I only buy
NorthAmerican or Euro-made, not Taiwanese), not everyone needs Corsairs or
Mushkin, a basic Kingston module will cost so little it's a sin not to buy.

You know what I did with old 2GB (1+1GB) I replaced with 4GB?
Threw into trash! The most I could get for it would be 5 bucks, not worth
selling - too much time posting ads.
Technology costs more in UK - a country of Charlse Babbage, etc. godfathers
of Computing, Radars, Trains, and the best technology language - ENGLISH!
Civilizations rise & fall, but the good news we're nothing but your
offspring, and you're our parent so there's continuity. My bosses were
often Irish, coworker is English-Irish, just a few examples.

Again memory is too cheap to worry about losing 0.75GB - that's your loss in
32 bit environment, 0.75GB, no big deal.
I know coming from 1980's perspective when 32KILObyte was considered serious
memory, this 0.75GB is jaw-dropping waste, but wake up, it's 2009.
In late 1980's I built a British-designed SinclairZXSpectrum based on
American Z80A microprocessor (not like today from pre-made modules a teenage
moron can assemble, but actully SOLDER/BUILD motherboards & etc boards from
zero), it had a "whopping" 64KB memory and we bragged to other folks who
built a domestic model with 32KB.
But a decade later of course it seemed funny, 32KB... we'll soon be
installing 32 GIGAbyte by year 2012.

Today memory is cheap, buy more, stimulate economy and run those Electronic
Engineering jobs down into the ground, because this is what rat race to the
    bottom is about.
And rememeber we're brothers & sisters - USA and UK heheheheh, let's go down
    together.

Don't you wish you could affrod a $6 sandwich in Manhattan? I'll bet you

One thing you forgot. If you use Linux then your programs won't work so it
doesn't matter if you have 1 TB of RAM. If your programs don't run then you
are screwed. Using Linux means you are screwed.

    Run don't walk from Linux.

Excuse me, but why don't my programs run? I have Linux installed and

Yeah, frankie, I'm wierd that way. I figure that when you spend <fill in

amount> to be productive - it should come with what you need.

Yeah, you're right, frankie. I browse the internet, prepare reports for
several organizations, keep track of a dozen or so banking accounts,
manage a half dozen or so web sites, edit photos on a fairly regular

So do you do all that in your basement? Most companies use Microsoft
    products to be productive.

What can be done with Linux? Glad you asked:

    Email
    Surf the web
    Burn CDs.
    Rip CDs.
    Listen to music.
    Watch vidoes/DVDs.
    Scan and print.
    Spreadsheets.
    Presentations
    Newsgroups.
    HTML editing.
Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc.
    Make videos.
Download photos from a camera and organize them.
    Translations.
    Use a dictionary
    Learn how to touch type.
    Edit images.
    Send and receive a fax.
    Take screenshots.
    Create .PDF files.
Create and use a data base.
Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including
    Windows Live Messenger.
    IRC.
    Bluetooth.

    and much more!

What you can't do with Ubuntu:

    Worry about:
WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,
    DRM,
    Viruses,
    Root kits,
    Spyware,
    and
    Malware.

Actually, I "do all that" anywhere I want. But if "most companies use
Microsoft", I guess I'll have to switch - I certainly want to be like
"most companies" - which, currently, seems to be in financial difficulty.
    Hmmmmmm - I wonder if there's a connection?
