Thanks! I do keep startup "lean and mean". Will surely uninstall Dell Advisor....I never know what those programs are!
Thanks for the info about Windows Live Mail. Looks like I can do that myself. I have printed out the directions.

I looked thru the logs of the few Dell Inspiron 3000s I've set up. In addition to Rich's advice, I'd uninstall the McAfee Internet Security software. Install your own malware protection.

Windows10 has built in Windows Defender which is updated MSE and works quite well.
For what Patsy is going to use the computer for this would be ample.
Malwarebytes free is a must as well to install.
I use Windows Defender, Malwarebytes free and SAS for the cookies on this computer and my system is clean.
In Patsy's case I think it would be overkill to get a paid antivirus. There are some good free ones available.

The biggest problem with Antivirus programs is very few of them can handle today's issues as "virus" is one of the most poorly used words in the industry today
and Antivirus programs are a vanishing act in today's markets as most have proven unable to handle today's issues. Microsoft officials over the years have cautioned users
about using Microsoft Security Essentials and/or Windows Defender as your sole means of protection and as fast as one says that the company releases a counter to their statement but the simple fact is Antimalware programs are the only thing you should be spending money on to protect in today's environment. The ones that definitely are useless against Malware are the free ones
and if you think about it with no $ support what is the incentive to keep up.

My suggestion is to use any free one in case a virus were ever to reappear and then choose Malwarebytes Pro or use Emsisoft paid which is the only one proven to work against all forms of
infections and then look into various forms of site protection such as WOT (Web of Trust), Adblock Plus, Win Patrol (to lock down startup and registry) and then most important of all, practice safe surfing habits! Nod 32 Antivirus however does show a surprising ability to give it's protection as well through its heuristics and site protection efforts few of the others have.

    Thanks!!

I had Emsisoft on his computer, so think I will be able to get it back on to take advantage to the remainder of the paid portion.
I also have a key for Malwarebytes Pro and I use MSE. Guess that is overkill for the little he uses the computer! After I get these on and working...then....I will certainly uninstall McAfee, I always do!
I used to have WinPatrol but did not fully understand it! Had WOT but stopped using that as well. Do use Adblock Plus but think it slows down the computer.
So, I will have a lot to do today when the thing comes....then a lot more when my returned HP All In One is sent back. Grrrrr HP!!

    Might be here for help!

Thank you so very much....everyone....for your input.

Uninstall McAfee before you install any antivirus, Patszy.

I don't see where Adblock Plus slows down the pc on the other hand I am using a high Gen4 Intel Cpu and 16 gb ram so I doubt I would. Win Patrol is just a neat little program to keep junk from taking over your pc. If you want to and I did many years ago you can buy it for $25 and then when you have a question about some of the entries it takes you to their site and tells you if the thing is safe or uses a lot of resources and exactly what it is. You can put it on so far an uncounted n umber of pcs so I think it is nice to have. I don't think that is over kill as Mbam can run with Emsisoft just fine though I would not run another Av with it and remember because he uses it less he is more of a risk to making a quick mistake so I don;t think you can ever have enough protection myself.

Thanks, Allheart, it does make sense to remove McAfee BEFORE I put the others on. I just think I need to not have any lapse in protection, so will put the others on immediately.

Rich-M....I had checked with you all before, I think, and knew I could run Emsisoft along with Malwarebytes. BUT....do you think it is ok to also run Windows Defender? He has LOTS of space! I had all three on my All In One that went dead!

No, Patszy, you don't ever want to run two antivirus programs.

I used Revo Uninstall before I saw these last two posts. It seemed to work smoothly but I will check to see if I can find any McAfee files and just delete them. Hope that is ok!!
