I have a PC and a laptop both of which I had 'rolled back' (if that's the word) from Vista to XP because I couldn't cope with Vista. It drove me to distraction.

I know if I'd stuck with Vista, Windows 7 would be much easier to get used to but I didn't. I'm worried now that I'm going to have the same nightmares that I had with Vista when I eventually have to replace my equipment.

I know Microsoft will withdraw support for XP eventually but does this mean for business or for home? I don't know how long I've got with my beloved XP before I enter the tunnel of confusion.

    Hi Annie and welcome back.

XP will continue to be supported until sometime in 2014 so I wouldn't concern myself.

That being said, I never had vista although have used some vista machines off and on. I went directly from XP to W7 and while things were different, in the end I would never go back. There is a learning curve involved but that is more about how to find things than how to use them. There is a search facility that actually will find most things for you.

Hi ANNIE. I read XP  will be with us, till 2014.

I have Windows XP Home, and Windows7 Ultimate.

    I prefer XP, personally. :)

That's made me feel a bit better! Who know what will happen by 2014. :D

I work in the public sector for a Local Education Authority & last year we all had new PCs. Each one has a Vista sticker & each one is XP. And thankfully we're all still with Office 2003 instead of 2007. If anyone gets an email with an Office 2007 Word/Excel attachment we have to log a call to our ICT to get a fix so we can open the attachment.

I can't remember this happening with previous versions of Office but I could be wrong.

You should be able to make office 2007 compatible with all versions and your IT guy should know how to do it without having to repeat the process each time. I am able to read office 2007 files on my old laptop that has Office 2000 and XP.

I think one thing needs to be clarified here....

Come July 13th, 2010, the second service pack for XP will reach the end of support, a point after which Microsoft will no longer offer any updates for the operating system version, or any sort of assistance in resolving issues affecting the product.

Customers running XP SP3 will be able to continue running the platform until 2014, at which point Extended support for XP as a whole will expire.

So if you are still running SP2, you will need to update it to SP3.

SP3 was the last service pack for 32-bit (x86) XP, and SP2 was the last upgrade for 64-bit (x64) XP.

My 2002 Sony Vaio laptop won't support Vista or W7.

My only option at that time will be Linux, if I want to keep using this laptop.

Just make sure you have SP3, Kojak and ponder the odds that you will feel the same way about your laptop in another 4 years.:snckr:

As is, it serves my basic need for connectivity. I do have my eye on the Core i series laptops.

Just checked & both PC & laptop are running SP3. But I can't be the only dinosaur - you can still buy PCs & laptops with XP. :p
