Would someone kindly help me solve a problem that "The Gurus" at Microsoft CAN'T

My name is Wayne Popin and I am visiting this site to see if anyone has ever been able to "turn off" or disable the uninstal-a-shield in Windows XP Pro with SP 2. I have any older Canon Multipass printer that will not install due to the uninstall program included within XP. Any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated

 

I don't think this is actually an issue with the OS, per say. It's more then likely a registry issue, what I would do, in case you have not done so yet, is either use a free registry cleanup utility such as Registry Mechanic 5.0 , or a Commercial product such as Norton System Works 2005 , and first clean out that registry, next DELETE the uninstall program for the printer,reboot your PC, and clean the registry again so that any reference to the uninstall program being present, will not be in the registry.

This will give you a CLEAN INSTALL of the drivers.

Sometimes you can also get by, when installing CANON DRIVERS, by MANUALLY installing them in the device manager, sometimes however, to install the device, you may be REQUIRED to use a setup program anyways.

When windows sees the .INF file it needs for the printer/scanner driver, the .INF might be written to say... "RUN THE SETUP PROGRAM"..

Which is usually the case in most recent Canon equipment that I have worked with.

So I would DEFINITLY do it the right way, and fix the registry first and reinstall with the setup.

I thank you for youtr suggestions and I have tried them, yet the printer still does not install or operate at all. The installation patch from Canon contains the following directions:




MultiPASS C530 Canon Bubble Jet Printer

Windows XP Installation
Q What must I do to install the MultiPASS C530 "Windows XP Driver" on a new Windows XP computer?


A To install the MultiPASS C530 "Windows XP Driver" on a new Windows XP computer, you will need to install the new drivers for Windows XP, reboot your computer, then run Setup2.exe. Please remember to run Setup2.exe after you have installed the new drivers for Windows XP and rebooted your computer.


1. Disconnect the printer cable to your MultiPASS C530. Then restart your computer and log on as “Administrator”. Select “Start”, “Turn Off Computer”, “Restart”. (Your computer restarts)


2. Download the new “Windows XP Driver” for the C530 (XPC530.exe) from the Canon Website to your computer desktop or wherever you save downloaded files.


3. Now extract the “Windows XP Driver”, “Double-click” the downloaded file C530 (XPC530.exe) from where you saved the downloaded files. (Files Extract)


4. At the "Canon Extractor - Information ‘All items were successfully extracted.’" dialog, Select OK


5. On the Windows taskbar, click “Start”, and then “Run”. In the Run dialog box type “C:\Temp\C530\Setup\Setup.exe”. Follow the on-screen instructions. When the installation is complete, you will need to restart your PC before running Setup2.exe.


6. Restart your computer and log on as “Administrator”. Select “Start”, “Turn Off Computer”, “Restart”. (Your computer restarts)


7. On the Windows taskbar, click “Start”, and then “Run”. In the Run dialog box type “C:\Temp\C530\Setup\Setup2.exe”.


8. When the “Hardware Installation” dialog appears, Select “Continue Anyway”.


9. When the “Update for Windows XP” dialog appears, Select “Yes”. (You will need to restart your PC before using the printer driver.)


Important: If the “Windows File Protection - Files that are required for Windows to run property have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM now.” dialog is displayed, Select “Cancel”. Then at the “Windows File Protection – You choose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may affect Windows stability. Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized file versions.” dialog, Select “Yes”.

But it does not tell you to install the original drivers that came with Win 95 or Win 98, I wonder if the install program is looking for something in the older driver package that is not in the new one? Also I found that in the Services console, one can turn off Windows Installer and Application Management, do you think this is advisable and will this prevent WINDOWS uninstaller from running? Any other tips or suggestions that an old man can try?

 

Did you try FIRST installing

Desktop Manager v3.10a91 for Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 from canon's DOWNLOAD page, and THEN install the updated driver ??

Or are the Desktop Manager v3.10a91 for Windows 95/98/Me/NT4, drivers the ones you are NOW trying to install ??
