Yeah, I have no idea how to find those files. I think I will take your advice and give it a go. It's just I dread the thought of doing another complete install, so, I hope I do it Ok.

Hi Rich. Here is another option. You say everything is working ok except the initial black boot menu screen which is annoying you.
If you are unsure which files are the correct ones to delete, leave them where they are.
Download EasyBCD FREE version at the bottom of the page and install.

    http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

Once open under "Edit Boot Menu" Place a tick in the check box next to the Windows7 version you want to boot from.
Click save settings and you will no longer have a black screen on boot.

The advice you have been given is correct however if you don't wish to format and reinstall then this is your next best option.

Thanks Dougie, I tried doing that and it didn't work, when I re-boot it takes me back to the black screen menu thinger. Maybe I did something wrong but I followed your instructions and I ticked on to the box next to Windows 7 as advised.

Did you click the "Save Settings" box? Rich.

How many Windows7 entries were there to select from in EasyBCD?

Try the other entry, highlight, move up, tick and save and reboot
There is a "Move up" icon above.

Ok my friend and thanks and thanks to Frank for all your suggestions and help. I am downloading something right now, so I will try it later after my bicycle trip to the river. My download should be done by then.

Hey, DSTM, I'm curious about something with EasyBCD. I still haven't downloaded the thing, think I just might as soon as I'm done here. I still have VistaBoot Pro installed. What I'm curious about is the selection of a specific OS to get rid of the menu. In this it sounds like it differs from what I've been using. In VistaBootPro you would have to select the default OS and then set the time to display menu to zero. With EasyBCD does selecting the OS cover both steps or would you also have to adjust the time to display menu? LOL! Since I'm going to install the thing I guess I'll probably answer my own question. ;)

Hi Jay I haven't tried Vista Boot Pro so can't comment on it. Also I don't like sending Newbies into MSCONFIG as they could stuff up and not always 2 OS showing as you know.EasyBCD does have a countdown from 30-0 seconds for the boot menu to show.Very easy to configure as you will find.
Different in Rich's case as he doesn't need a boot menu.Once he sets Windows7 recovered to boot from he can delete the old Windows7 OS from startup altogether.Disc Cleanup should show the old OS files to delete in most cases.
As you know if you install from the earliest OS first the Windows boot manager shows.Reinstall the earliest OS again and no Windows boot manager.A lot are using dodgy Copies of OS and start up repair doesn't show on the install disc so an after market Boot manager is necessary.
I use EasyBCD to set triple boot and it has never failed me.So many options for a free program.
    Give us your impressions, Jay.
Pretty foolproof for those not so advanced that's why in some cases I link to EasyBCD.:)

Ok, I installed EasyBCD and I thought that I made the correct selection as far as what to boot at startup and so on, but, it is still taking me to the black boot manager screen once my Pc boots and asks me what O/S to select????? What have I done wrong????

Looks like you have saved an OS copy to your external, E:Drive Rich.
That doesn't work. Delete the entry on your Slave external.
Disconnect your external from the computer while we sort this.

My E drive is my slave Dougie and it is internal right below my main drive. F drive is my external. My E drive use to be my main before I bought the Seagate 1TB Sata 3. I changed the boot sequence as my Pc boots from C not E, if you follow.

Yes Dougie I tried that as well and it didn't work. PS: RE post #35, when I bought that new Seagate drive, I disconnected all of my other drives when I loaded Win 7 on to it. I am thinking maybe I still don't have Easy BCD configured properly. I am leaving for work shortly, so, I will play around with it some more when I get back home tonight. Thanks for all your help, I am sure we will get it sorted eventually. :D

Ok Rich...Check out the image below..

    1. Open BCD and select the Edit Boot Menu tab.

    2. Highlight the first/top entry and click on Delete.

    3. Repeat step 2 for the other Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered) entry.

    4. Now change the value in the Count down from box to 5.

    5. Last of all click on Save Settings.

NOTE: Leave the tick in the Microsoft Windows 7 box.

Now reboot your computer and do not touch anything at all until the machine has fully booted into Windows 7.

Thank you Frank, I think we finally got it solved. I took it a step further, I set the count down to 1 and now I don't see the black screen anymore and it boots almost instantly. I also think you're right, in that I must have installed 2 copies of Win 7 Ultimate on my C drive by accident. Anyways, it works now and at least we got rid of that annoying black screen on boot up. :D

Glad you're sorted out Rich, but I think it's Dougie who you owe your thanks to. He was on the money right from post #3.

    All's well that ends well...
