Hi, I have two issues that I was hoping to get help with. First off I am running an HP Elite m9402f with Windows 7 home premium. the only upgrade I have made to it was the video card and am using a Radeon 4650HD

My first problem that I can't figure out is with windows updates. For the last three days now upon startup, windows updates comes up but is stuck at 0%. It stays there for a good 5-10 minutes before telling me "failure applying windows updates. reverting changes." No errors or anything so I have nothing else to go on with that. I read in another forum that sometimes when this happens the issue isn't on my end, and to wait a day or so. But this has been the third day now with the same issue.

My second issue is with random shutdowns. I will be in the middle of something and the screen will just go blank and do a hard shutdown. Normally when i start it back up it will be fine but it has done another one within 10 minutes of starting back up. It doesn't happen very often, my last one was a couple days ago and there was a couple weeks in between the one before that. But still very annoying and I can't imagine it's good for my machine.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, Thanks for reading :)

From what I can tell about that computer it was a Best Buy spec machine that was manufactured before Windows 7. It came standard with Vista. Have you updated it to Windows 7 and, if so, do you still have the W7 disks?

It does seem like a W7 problem.

Hello Tethmes and Welcome to CHF,

If you haven't checked for why the updates have failed yet,
perform the following. Click on View update history, highlight
any update that says failed. Right-click and select view
details. It will give you the error codes and also a link to click
on with "Get help with this error".

It's probably Windows 7 SP1 causing the problem. I have seen
    this issue twice...
Your other option is to use the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Well, I ran the update repair and it said the problem was fixed. However upon restart, nothing updated at all. So I went back to the updater and apparently SP1 was never downloaded along with a few other updates that were unchecked for whatever reason. (I never did this, I just let it do it's thing as far as updates are concerned.) So I'm guessing applying SP1 would fix a few problems for me?

Also, you were correct that I did update to 7 prior to getting the computer. I installed 7 a year to the day after getting the computer and I do still have the install disk.

I appreciate the quick responses you guys are giving by the way, thanks so much for that. :)

Not sure how you did that without a disk. Dis someone do it for you? It looks as if it must be genuine if it is updating at all since non genuine copies will not normally update anything.

You may want to try a system restore back to before the last 3 days and then add SP1 before the other updates and see if that helps.

If that doesn't work I will throw it back to allheart55 who is wiser than me.

I said I do have the disk :) I bought my 7 as a christmas gift to myself the year after getting my computer. But I'll try the system restore after work tonight and let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the help.

If any help, when I got this Windows 7 machine last June, I had a problem with some updates not installing, I forget now exactly what the fault was, but the Microsoft site has a trouble shooting facility, I just let that run, it found the problem and sorted it. I have had no problems since.

The link that Allheart posted goes to a blank page now for some reason, so try this one and go through the processes suggested.

For what it is worth, I have W7 which I updated from Vista. These current windows updates were not happening properly for me on startup or shutdown either. I went in and installed each update separately. That worked, although time consuming.
