Windows Print Server

Discussion in 'Windows Home Server' started by AndyTC@community.nospam, May 9, 2009.

  1. Hello,

I'm setting up a R2 Print server, Standard Edition, 64-bit.
All my clients are XP 32-bit.
So the server will not allow me to add a printer with 32-bit XP drivers.
I can goto the print server and add the 32-bit driver, but after this
point, I cannot add a printer using those drivers!
When I choose the 32-bit drivers I have downloaded from using the have
disk, it tells me they aren't supported on an x64 system!
What is going on here? How can I add a printer and assign it 32-bit
    drivers in the print server?

  2. Hello AndyTC@community.nospam,

Did you add the 32bit drivers as additional drivers on the 64bit print server,
    printer properties?

    Best regards

    Yes.
I still can't see how to assign them to a printer. When I add a printer,
it only allows me to choose 64-bit drivers.

  4. Hello AndyTC@community.nospam,

If the printer on the print servers has the 32bit drivers also added and
the client machine uses the add printer wizard, search AD for the printer
you just have to choose the printer. The driver then will be copied from
the print server to the client machine.

ok so what you are saying is, I have to install each printer initially
with the 64-bit drivers, even though I have no 64-bit clients. Then, I
can add 32-bit as additional drivers and it will work, correct?

Yes, that's the theory, anyway. Sometimes people run into interesting
    problems with this.

  7. Hello AndyTC@community.nospam,

Correct, first the print server has to recognize the printer device with
it's correct drivers and that are 64bit. Then you have to install the additional
drivers for your clients OS version, which 32bit.

If that doesn't work please post again with the error messages you get, somtimes
    problems occur that way.

    Best regards

  8. When the 32bit print driver name is not the same as the 64bit print driver
name, the driver is NOT the same driver.
