It's now a long time since I worked with XP, however, if you right click on any of the video files, what choices do you get in that right click menu?
I am hoping that you can choose to make VLC the default player from there, if not let us know just what you see in that right click menu please.

Thanks guys, but I already figured out how to fix it and keep same programs. I right clicked each file type...avi, mp4, mp3, wma, that was there.I chose Open With then Choose Program then chose VLC then checked Always Use This Program To Open This File Type. THEN all the icons changed to VLC. So I now have latest version VLC, still have 5Kplayer which may have some other options to try, and VLC is now the default player. Mission accomplished. And didnt tear ALL my hair out in the process.

    Good one,BGBG.
VLC will often play videos that WMP and others won't.
    VLC has it's own Codecs.
I have had VLC for some years now and wouldn't be without it.

The way I said should allow you to change all defaults in Tools, Preferences.

I always use the "Open With" option, Rich.
    Quick and simple.

I dont know why Rich, but I think the settings in Tools, Preferences, video were all right. Maybe when I installed the 5Kplayer it just took over as default. I have noticed that some programs do that, make themselves the default. But they usually tell you.

In fact the way you did it I was going to lead you through it, however you found it and beat me to it, well done and problem solved.
The other way would have been to use the default programs list, however sometimes the program you want as a default can be a struggle to actually get it on the list.

I have to say I uninstalled the 5K player, not that I wanted to or it is not good, but I got tired of it insinuating its icon on many files including hidden and system files and even cookies and I was unable to change this even with file type assistant choose program. I still have the install file in case I want it back but I dislike programs that "Take Over" everything and do not offer the operator/owner the option of changing it. I think there was something called Real Player that did this, but I only read about it, not actually experienced it. But it tipped me off to watch out.
For me, VLC is FINE. And I will be sure to check for updates.

Yes, BG. RealPlayer is a real PITA. It does the exact same thing not to mention the sheer size of it.
