Windows Firewall Automatic Re-Enable

    My computer (XP Pro SP3) is a member of the domain and protected by an
    external firewall. I repeatedly turn off Windows Firewall but each
    time I log in, it gets set on again.

    I thought this might be controlled by a group policy object but after
    checking the default domain policy, I see that all settings for
    Network Connections and Windows Firewall are "Not configured". Since
    my computer name is in the list of Computers under the top line of the
    domain, I believe I'm looking in the correct container. Right?

    I can keep Windows Firewall disabled by going into my computer's Local
    Computer Policy and disabling Windows Firewall but I'd rather stop the
    undesired behavior at the source. What are some other things that may
    be controlling this?

    Bob,
    I think that if it is controlled by GP you would not have access to change
    it. The settings are greyed out even if you are a local admin.
    What other security software do you have on that computer?

    Anthony,
    I don't have any other security software. I re-installed XP to get
    rid of a bunch of installed apps then ran msconfig to turn off the
    remaining ones.

    I am able to log in as domain admin so I believe I would have access
    to anything. What setting are you referring to (other than network
    connections and firewall)?

    Bob,
    Either the setting in the GUI is not taking effect, or it is being reset by
    something other than policy.
    When you reset it in the GUI, I would try netsh firewall show config to see
    what the settings actually are. Then try again say 10 minutes later; then
    try again after a restart.
    This will at least tell you if the setting is not taking effect, or if it is
    being reset,

    I would try the group policy results wizard to be sure no gpo's are being
    applied.
