    Hi everyone,

So today I was deleting programs that I no longer needed and suddenly my windows explorer stopped working. I restarted my computer and I had multiple windows updates (10) and after the restart windows explorer stll wasn't working and now I had a blank desktop with only my wallpaper. I tried shutting down my computer completely and booting it back up. Now everything seems to work but there is some weird stuff going on. This is what I've noticed so far (there could be more): Google chrome won't open at all, neither the shortcut or the exe file. Google chrome is my standard web browser, using Firefox atm to post this thread. The AVG interface is really weird and my computer gave me a warning to activate AVG. Windows defender had to reconfigure itself for some reason.

All these programs worked fine before the Windows explorer crashed.

I've added a screenshot to show the AVG interface. I've never really encountered a problem like this before so if I need to give any additional information please say so.

Ok paint is acting weird as well; when trying to save the AVG picture paint would crash when I clicked on the C drive so I had to save it to the D drive.

I'll be adding additional information when other weird things pop up.

Oh my god this is annoying xD

I don't know why but the edit button has disappeared (unless I'm blind). Anyway I've tried rebooting my computer again and it's always the same thing "Windows explorer has stopped working" "Trying to solve the problem" "Windows explorer is restarting.."

Edit: Aha there is an edit button for this post but not for my original post xd. After it has restarted (the Windows Explorer) it doesn't give me any error messages.

Hi StarDoch. Welcome to Computer Help Forums.
What issues are you still encountering after the reboot?

    - Google Chrome won't start
    - AVG is messed up (I get keeping the "turn on AVG 2012 message" by the solve pc issues icon)
    - Windows Explorer has to restart after every reboot
    - Paint crashes when clicking save as -> jpeg -> "OS(C:)" icon under computer

I think the first error I got from windows explorer said something about memory allocation but it went away too quickly to fully read.

edit: When opening some programs it's like opening them for the first time. I get configuration messages etc. I'm trying to play around with some stuff and see what else is wrong.

I wouldn't play around till this is sorted.
Can you do a system restore to a point prior to these issues?
Did you use a Registry cleaner by any chance to clean up?

I had system backup disabled so alas can't do a system restore. Didn't use registry cleaner I just manually deleted programs that I didn't use like games, pdf readers, cyberlink, etc. I was trying to be extra careful not to delete any files that would cause software failure. Trying to remember the program I deleted when WE stopped working but it was something trivial I think. I deleted the programs from the programs and features menu.

    New problem arose:

While using the search function in WE it crashed. Now it's in a loop going from " WE has stopped working" to "WE is restarting". It seems like it's randomly crashing when in use (like when I tried saving a file in paint).

Edit: Ok I got an error message this time while cancelling the WE restart. I added it to the attachments.

It sounds as if you have accidently deleted much needed system files. Please click on Start > All Programs >
Accessories and then right click on command prompt and select Run as Administrator. In the command prompt
window type sfc /scannow. Please have your operating system disk available as you may be asked to insert it
at some point during the scan.

I don't have an operating system disk available, I'm pretty screwed aren't I? XD Trying the scannow atm, I'm curious to see what's wrong.

I'm 99% certain though that I didn't delete any system files, how is this possible xd

    Result of the scan:

..found some corrupt files was unable to fix all of them.. details are included in the CBS.log

You may have a system recovery partition on your hard disk. This would allow you to restore
your computer back to factory default. (Keep in mind, in doing so, you will lose everything on
your computer in the way of personal files etc.)

No way... Isn't there another method to solve this issue? I tried booting in safe mode and the problem is still there. How do I save my personal files to an external hard drive if I can't even open Windows Explorer..

So how do I restore my computer back to factory default and where can I find out if I have a system recovery partition?

If you know someone that you can borrow a Windows 7 disk from you can try and repair your computer by
    replacing the corrupted/missing system files.

In order to give you directions for a factory recovery we need to know the computer manufacturer....

The manufacturer is ASUS and the laptop model is G53S Series.

But if I'd have this Windows 7 disk how would I replace the corrupted/missing system files and how would I know what files are corrupted/missing in the first place?

If you had a Windows 7 disk you would need to run the command sfc /scannow as an Administrator with your OS
disk inserted. Missing and/or corrupted files will automatically be replaced from the DVD.

To proceed with a factory recovery, restart your computer. Press the F9 key immediately when the ASUS logo
appears. It will start the recovery procedure, including the installation of all the drivers and utilities. Follow the
on screen instructions and when complete your computer will be restored to the factory settings.

WARNING: All personal files and folders will not be recovered. You will lose them.

Are only the files on my c drive lost or are the files on my d drive lost as well? My c drive is where the OS is installed.

What allheart is doing is giving you a quick way to start over. As she said, you will lose all your saved data. That does not mean it is lost. You can remove the hard drive and get a USB adapter. Attach it to another computer and copy your files in order to replace them when you are finished with the factory restore. If that is important to you then do that first and then follow allhearts55's instructions. If there is nothing important that you want to save then just proceed as instructed.

Alright. Thanks for the advice people, it is much appreciated. Wonderful thing to offer help to people in need :) I hope that one day I can do the same (I'm in my first year of Comp Sci)!!

I'm going to try and look for a Windows 7 disk and otherwise I'll just do the system recovery. Thanks again, at least I know what I'm dealing with now!

I found Asus recovery instructions on the manufacturer website and it looks as if you may be able to keep everything
on your D drive partition using option "A" Recover Windows to first partition only. See below...

    1. Restart the Computer.
    2. As the computer is booting up tap F9 repeatedly on the keyboard, which will bring up Asus Recovery Partition Utility.
      a. You must start tapping F9 before the Windows Logo appears on the screen. If the Windows logo appears then restart the process.
    3. Press Enter to select Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].
    4. Select the language you want to recover in and click Next.
    5. After reading the Asus Preload Wizard messages, click Next.
    6. Restore Options:

      a. Recover Windows to first partition only.

      i. This option will delete only the first partition of your Hard Drive and allows you to keep other partitions safe. This will create a new system partition as the “C:” drive.

      b. Recover Windows to Entire Hard Drive:

      i. This option will delete all partitions from your Hard Drive and creates a new system partition as the “C:” drive.
      c. Recover Windows to Entire Hard Drive with two partitions:

      i. This option will delete all partitions from your Hard Drive and then create two new partitions called the “C:” Drive which holds 25% and the “D:” Drive which holds the remaining 75%.

      1. I recommend this option due to you can restore Windows in a later point but keep the “D:” partition safe.

    7. Select a partition/option and click Next.
    8. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the recovery process.
    9. Once finished click Next or OK and the computer will restart.

Wow that's awesome! So if I can copy my important files to the D drive when windows explorer isn't in a crash loop I'm saved. Thanks a bunch I feel so relieved. Do you reckon this will completely fix the problem? If it will I might just save myself from trying to find a Windows 7 disk and just go with this method.

It should correct the issue as recovering the C drive partition is equivalent to a clean installation of Windows 7.
You will still need to install any software or other programs as they cannot be saved.
