Every time I try to download or even view any attachment to any email, and every time I try to download anything, Windows defender says it has a virus and has been deleted. Even things from emails I have previously viewed, known sources, etc. I have tried several ways to disable or remove Defender, to no avail. In fact, it doesn't even show up where I think it is supposed to be. I'm wondering if this is a virus? I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Warning - I am computer literate, but not that's about it. Thanks! Mike

Hi Mike. Welcome to Computer Help Forums.
There is a registry fix for this problem but hesitant to go down this route.

Turn Windows Defender off and send yourself a test email and see if the issue is resolved.
In Search box type defender click on Defender then Tools > options and untick the 2 boxes and click Save.

Download and install "Malwarebytes Free" Enter Safe Mode (tapping F8 on boot) and run a full scan just to be on the safe side.

That's the problem! I can't turn off Windows Defender. I have tried several methods I saw online but none have worked and WD does not even show up where it's supposed to be. I tried to download the malware program you suggest and Defender came up and told me it had a virus and wouldn't allow it. That's what it does for everything! Any idea on how to turn it off or remove it?

Go into safe Mode and select "Safe Mode with networking" from the options.
Download and install Malwarebytes Free while in Safe Mode and run the full scan.
    Post the Log.
You should be able to do this whilst in Safe Mode.
While in Safe Mode no malware can prevent you from downloading and installing Malwarebytes.
If you are not successful then our Malware Specialists will help you.

    Hi Mike,

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
Make sure the following options are checked:

    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    Press "Scan".
When finished, It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

    Thanks
