Windows Defender, etc opens and closes in 2 seconds!

On a whim I decided to configure my Vista start up programs (ie get rid
of all the crap!) I went thru the control panel to 'performance info
and tools', these open and stay open fine. When I click on 'Manage
start up programs' it opens the window then quickly (maybe 1-2 seconds)
closes itself. After clicking other windows to see if they would open
or not I found that Window Defender does the same thing.... I am
running ZoneAlarm suite with anti-spy/virus and use their firewall, not
windows. I've run it and not found anything major (only tracking
cookies, etc) Even when I shut down ZA, Defender still won't open - so
no conflict there. This sounds like virus..... right? What do I
    do???
    Thanks for any help!

If you uninstall ZA then you can use Defender.

Why do you think the system needs to be have a ZA suite ...
To monitor outbound traffic ? [Windows Advanced Firewall does that]
To protect it from spyware ? [Windows Defender does that]

Here's something for you to think on ... if the system gets infected by
malware, why would you trust ZA to allow outbound traffic since ZA will
    probably be infected, too ?

Sorry, I'm not a fan of these security 'suites'. A standalone antivirus
that is designed to monitor the OS, a hardware firewall in a router,
Windows Defender, and the native Vista firewall are sufficient protection.
Add running in a Standard User account and, in fact, with a little
common sense, no AV is needed.

Unfortunately, common sense seems to be in short supply when it comes to
    computer Users.
