Windows and office 2003 on TS

Discussion in 'Windows Home Server' started by nish in exile, Jul 20, 2009.

  1. user was having very odd issue with word, very long load times, huge wait
for *virus scan* and the at last-not able to open at all with error mssg and
asking to start in safe mode etc. Did not solve the issue in safe mode,
cannot open any toher way-just asks to send *error report* and then back to
safe mode choice...if you choose safe mode you get the basic app, but am
unable to do anything with it. If not choose safe mode it just cycles back
to the error mssg and the safe mode choice..ad infinum
tried *repair* from Help in winword-while in *safe mode*
tried repair from add remove computer
    all failed-decided to uninstall/reinstall
mistakenly removed from Term Server all together-I know, I know- I was not
    thinking...not enough coffee

Issue now is I cannot reinstall WinWord on the TS
When I try to install/repair/reinstall (checking the blank Winword box) it
goes through a bit of install, then asks for the office11.msi. I point it to
that-it says that is not a valid install package. I have used a share on
    another server
I have used a share of the TS
I have used the OEM cd (Vol Lic) on the TS
used a shared CD on the DC
always the same thing-it cannot/will not/does not like the office11.msi, or
any other .msi related to that application....
When I try to reinstall the entire program it wants me to first get rif of
the current install, which I positively *will not do* if I am only going to
find it won't recognioze the .msi when i try to reinstall it again.

    I have rebooted the TS
The share have the right permissions
    I use the admin acount
I try throu the add new program on TS

    Hi,

This is most likely a problem with your Office install, and is
unrelated to TS. Sometimes it is enough to completely
uninstall/reinstall office, other times you may need to do
part or all of the uninstall using manual methods. Once
it is uninstalled cleanly you should be able to reinstall
    office without issues.

Are you using a volume license version of Office? I was
confused by your mentioning that you "used the OEM
cd (Vol Lic) on the TS"--this is contradicary statement,
since the OEM versions of Office are *different* than
    the Volume versions.

Troubleshooting/repairing office installations can be very
complex. There is a lot of information available in the
Microsoft knowledgebase and elsewhere on the Internet.

Keep in mind that if an issue is only affecting one user
it may be that their profile is corrupt, and/or one of
their user-specific office data files is corrupt.

  3. My mistake, I meant to say it is a Volume License, and that I used the
original MS Office 2003 cd. supplied with the Vol Lic
I have searched the net-for 2 days, and while yes, there is a *lot* of
information- there is nothing that I have found that comes close to helping
me reinstall Winword without having to unistall/reinstall the entire suite.
    Also, why would it say

"office11.msi is not a valid installer package please point to office11.msi,
or location/folder where it can be found" ?????

    That is making me crazy.
I direct it to the cd
I direct to a folder where everything was copied
I direct to a shared admin folder
I have even directed it to the MSOCache, hidden folder

always says the same thing. It repeats the above messg.

There is nothing wrong with the cd as I brought it home and installed it on
a Vista *Business* box without a single issue.

Still, thank you for taking the time to help...because I am grasping at
    straws-or sledgehammers

    Hi,

I recommend you uninstall office, and then re-install. On a
fast server it can take 5-10 minutes to install office with a
similar time to uninstall. On a slower server maybe it would
take 30 minutes or more to uninstall/reinstall. This assumes
a working office install. Yours may need to be manually
    repaired/removed.

I have experienced the same problem you have--it can be
a pain. I think last time I experienced it was with Office
2000 or Office XP. It isn't that the .msi file is corrupted,
it is something more related to it not liking the version or
    similar.

The office install is complex, and the installer technology it
is built upon is similarly complex. There are many moving
parts. You could literally spend 100s of hours dissecting
the office install database file, examining registry entries
and files on your server, learning about windows installer,
    etc.

Because of this you need to set a limit on how many
hours you spend attempting to find the precise set of
changes needed to fix things. There are cases where
you can spend a few hours examining the installer log
    and fixing the problem.

I suggest you change your focus to getting Office
completely uninstalled. This may take some time as well.
Microsoft has tools that will help you remove Office
when the regular uninstall does not work.

    Thanks.

  5. Thank you, this issue has been resolved.
Re-installed everything, as suggested and except for a single warning
dialogue box stating *word encountered problems...blah blah* everything is
working excellent. No user issues, no complaints.
The whole "unable to install" was because the original install was from an
Admin install point -which someone had then deleted, and of course there was
no docs explaining who/when/how the install was put in place originally...
    Reseller's
they come in, they make a million changes here, there, everywhere, and leave
no trail as to what they have done so the poor guy that is new has nothing
    to work with at all.
I now have a full trail as to what has been done, why it was done, the date,
    the changes-everything.

    Anyway
Thank you to all who tried to help-there are a few users wandering around
with a bite or two out of them, but they will survive.
