Windows Updates is not working on my Activated 7 64 bit Home Premium from HP Recovery disks set I bought from HP.

    Here's the twist:
It did not work first time, then did work when I moved the HDD to "another" HP laptop.
Made a Easus disk image backup copy at that time.

The back-up was "installed" to a larger HDD on the "another" laptop.
But now Windows Updates once again does not work.

    Have tried a zillion things.
Anyone know the exact route for a fix?

PS: Things I have tried, for reference:

sfc /scannow (files corrupted but cannot be repaired automatically, its reports) Cannot access the CBS report log. Access denied.

Setting Windows Updates Service to Automatic.

    Windows 7 and earlier versions:
From .cmd, paste the following commands, and press Enter after each command:
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    (This did not help.)

Run Windows Update Standalone Package from 2013. No help.

Will Run Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool next.

This issue can be fixed by paying for a remote fix service like ReImage, but who has that kind of coin these days? I would rather beat my head against the wall and DIY or die trying. More like DIM... do it myself.

No issues to resolve in the Windows Genuine Advantage run mentioned above.

Its running in Test Mode. I just now noticed that in the lower right of the desktop view. Don't know what that means or what to do about it. Its news to me! Might be something to do with the fact that the disk image has been bounced around between my two computers and two hard drives.

But its still shown as Activated.
Will Google the Test Mode thing.

I made the Test Mode run, I think. I disabled drivers signing earlier today. Will try to get that back, if I can find the how-to.

Went through it and no joy. Lots of error windows in addition to the success windows after adding each sack race, I mean batch file. :bnghd:
I have re-loaded the disk image in hopes that Windows Updates will fire again. We shall see.

You say this is an image copy off an operating system off another laptop?
You should be getting a popup in the right bottom corner of the screen "This is not a legitimate copy of Windows". If you haven't already, you will.
You can't validate the image copy on a second Laptop and IMO that's the reason you can't get updates.
You can only have one Legitimate copy of Windows7 with Product key on one computer unless you bought a "Family Pack Licence"
The image copy you made is meant for the laptop you took a screen image of.
I would buy another copy of Windows7 with product key and install on second laptop.
If you have a Windows 7 product key stuck on the bottom of the second laptop and no install disc you can get a copy from "Digital River" and burn an ISO.
Microsoft doesn't care where you get the OS ISO disc from as long as the product key will validate the install.

No "This is not a legitimate copy of Windows" on any of the tries, but will keep an eye peeled for that.
I did happen to make an .iso disk image today, from Digital River. It has SP1 included.

Might have to install from the HP Recovery disks set again, but would rather not have to go through the many hours to get it up to my specs a second time. Thanks for the input.

    Hi Johnny,
Once a single licence copy of windows has been installed on a computer, you cannot install that copy on another computer legitimately. You would have to purchase a new product key for that copy of windows to become validated.

After installing windows on a machine, Microsoft does an extensive check on the hardware (and other details) components of that computer, so that copy of windows becomes tied to that machine. If enough component parts are changed, even if the HDD is not changed in any way, then windows would have to be validated for a second time. Sometimes this process would involve speaking to microsoft on the telephone to explain why for instance, the motherboard, processor, ram, etc has been changed. Then and only then will Microsoft validate your copy of windows.

Here's a list of the checks that Microsoft makes before giving the ok/validating.

    (Copied from Microsoft site)

    • Computer make and model
    • Standard computer information, such as your IP address, operating system version, software version, browser version, and regional and language settings
    • A unique number assigned to your computer by the tools (Globally Unique Identifier or GUID)
    • Product Key (hashed) and Product ID
    • BIOS name, revision number, and revision date
    • Hard drive volume serial number (hashed)
    • Whether the installation was successful if one was performed
    • The result of the validation check, including error codes and information about any activation exploits and any related malicious or unauthorized software found or disabled, including:
      • The activation exploit’s identifier
      • The activation exploit's current state, such as cleaned or quarantined
      • Original equipment manufacturer identification
      • The activation exploit’s file name and hash of the file, as well as a hash of related software components that may indicate the presence of an activation exploit
    • The name and a hash of the contents of the computer's start-up instructions file (commonly called the boot file) to help us discover activation exploits that modify this file.

Some people say that there are ways of activating a copy of windows that is not legitimate. That may be the case. But CHF does not support in any shape or form pirated software. That would include trying to install a legitimate copy of a program or OS on multiple computers, unless the software carries a multiple use licence.

I don't support or attempt pirated either.
This is a legit copy bought from HP.

The root issue was the new HP Recovery disks not updating on the intended, designated laptop after the first installation.

I tried that HDD on another HP and updates worked.
After that, it all went down hill.
So, its going on the back burner for now. :lurk5:

    I am confused.
Above you say you "burnt an ISO from Digital River" and now you say it is a"legit copy from HP".
    Things just don't add up.:)

They add. No question of that. :)

The HP Recovery disks set was bought from HP recently to replace a faded key on the back of a client's HP laptop.

The 7 with Sp1 from Digital River was another, unrelated event. I only mentioned it since you had made reference to it in this topic.

I installed that Digital River .iso today on my good HP, and used the key on the bottom.
Confirmed it via telephone with MS and the updates are running.

As for the HP Recovery Disks, I will hold them for another time.
The HP they were ordered for has gone out the door with a new key I provided.
The installation from those disks would not update, so I went with a new key for the guy.

Issue is solved and closed, as far as I am concerned.
Thanks for all the good input and ideas.
