Is there ever any particularly good reason to dissable "8.3 name creation"
    on windows 2008? Even with 300,000 - 400,000 files in a directory, I haven
not been able to get a performance difference between the two settings.
Assuming each file is atlest 1MB in size, is there any real additional
wear and tear on the hard drive when "8.3 name creation" is enabled?

Enabling/disabling (disable = dis+able) will not affect the performance of
your server. Some people disable it because it can lead to certain
ambiguities when using wildcards. On the other hand having more than 10,000
files in a single folder will affect performance. You will probably notice a
substantial difference between these two scenarios:
    a) 400,000 files in a single folder.
[IMG] 10,000 files in each of 40 folders.
