Windows 2003 Print Server Abstraction

Discussion in 'Windows Home Server' started by Dan Arsenault, May 1, 2009.

  1. Is it possible to create an abstract print server name that allows users to
see printers at \\serverX\printqueuename where serverx is a CNAME or alias.
This would allow us to move the print server to a new platform without having
to change all of our client printers.

Could it be done with DNS and WINS aliases by removing strict name checking
    on the host?

    Has anyone tried this?

I'm surprised this hasn't been a feature request, sort of like DFS for
    printers.

  2. Hello Dan,

Check this one for changing the client's:

Yes that's been a request for a while.
