A rogue folder appeared on my external HDD.
It was named Windows 2000 uninstall or something similar.

Next re-boot of the 2000 machine fell on fatal hard times.
Blue screen every time, in all variances and attempts.

First two tries, the blue stop screen said system license violation.
All the rest of the tries said page file error or something similar.

The format and clean install is working fine.

Finding a firewall for 2000 pro SP4 has proven to be a chore.
    Finally found one from Denmark.

I don't have a clue where the folder came from and "who done it".
I was running old Zone Alarm Firewall that was on the HDD since forever.
    Was running Avast anti-virus.

Must have been some Windows 2000 Googled site I visited.
Could have been a rogue programmer
:snckr: from MS having a field day with my updates.

If it happens again, I will save the rogue folder to a CD for further reference.

So far, all the massive updates for this new install are done and its still running.

My old Dell 266 MHz laptop is running the same OS and is also running OK.

Its a trip using 2000. Its getting so yesterday, today.
Still a solid OS and usable on older machines. No licensing yada yada is the attractive element.

MS ended further support July 2010, but the existing updates and service packs are available. Security-wise, its a crap shoot now, so might pick up an XP disk for my back-up machine, to replace the Windows 2000 Pro SP4. The laptop cannot handle XP, so it will keep the 2000 till 3000.

I have had a desire to find my old Windows 98 machine and get it up and running. Unfortunately it is in Ireland in the attic and I expect it ain't gonna happen.

It would probably be able to run 2000 Pro SP4 if it has enough CPU power... 266MHz minimum like my Dell.
The 2000 story is slowly fading, of course. At least it was and is a great OS, unlike 98SE.

I prefer Windows 7, of course.
Was a Beta tester for it.

I just happened to get this spare machine from storage to CMA till I can get the big boy back into service after that HDD failure mentioned in another topic.

I love operating software, but that slowly failing HDD tested my limits of fun... it was none.

Even the subject of this thread was fun after I got past the blue screen shock.
The fresh install of 2000 is so speedy that I think I am running a modern machine with 7, by comparison to the failing HDD of yesteryear (2010).
