I would do nothing. My thought would be that the thief needed the money more than I did and $10.00 would not exactly bankrupt me.

Any one who steals even a penny should be at least punished, theft either of small change or millions, it doesn't matter about quantity, what matters is theft should never be allowed.

Yeah unfortunately theft of millions doesn't count as a crime Nev, well at least not to the rich and powerful who most of the time get away with it.

As for the thief, rather than get the small amount of money back, I'd make them do community service as if it was minimum wage (about £6 an hour so around $10), so this particular thief would do an hours worth of community service be it cleaning the streets or planting things, just to make the place look better and me getting the satisfaction of taking an hour of their day away from them :)

    Interesting, isn't it....great idea, Woodyblade! Also Nev, I agree...whether $10 or $100 or $100,000...it is all theft.

I think my reaction would be similar to Snoopy's, although it would depend on how broke I was feeling at the time, and who or what the person is about.....say if it was someone I knew that had that sort of problem, then I would talk to them. You always hear advice from the law enforcement people to not confront criminals.

i guess everything has to be taken into consideration here.
    what if he/she was hungry
i imagine I would probably let him have the 10 bucks
    and give them more.

    depends on the circumstances.
    kayrose

specially if he was richer than me.

    ;)

OK, time for my famous "Lets go a little deeper now after the first comment".
We seem to be going down a long and twisting road of mitigating circumstances here. To fully understand those circumstances and take appropriate action, the thief has to be someone you already know, and all to often that arises where a family member steals a few pounds or dollars from aunties purse. Then there is the trusted employee, the long term friend, the guy from across the road and maybe more.

Theft is still a crime though and I feel this is where society is going wrong and soft as there is little enough punishment by the law, never mind what or how a family reacts to another family member caught with a hand in the purse.

To me, the person who steals, whether known to me or a complete stranger, if caught they should be punished and properly enough to make that person realise theft will not be tolerated.

If they are genuinely hard up and need money to survive, then asking for either a loan or a full gift is the correct way to go. They may or may not get it but I would sooner give to a beggar on the street than let a thief get away with it.

    Nev.

Actually i'm with you almost all the way,
but i remember very well, taking a buck from my mom's purse.
I couldn't sleep so i got up and told her after she had asked me repeatedly if i took it, and
    I finally told her I did .

Sometimes ones concience is the penalty .

I'd confront them and have them believe I was about to break their jaw. But in truth I probably wouldn't hurt them. I'd just like to see them squirm a little...

There are so many different types of theft and to me one is as bad as the other.
Theft by deception pisses me off the most.

Some are vicious, some are experimental
    as mine was,

    still theft.

My wife and I went out to dinner one night. When we came out, I found a guy in my car going through my glove box and such. I slammed the door on his legs (flying kick style) and he got up and ran. I followed him in my car for 20 minutes before I cornered him. I got out (I'm all of 5 feet, 5 Inches tall and he was better than 6 feet tall) I jumped up, got him in a headlock and just continued to pound his face. This is not a joke folks. This really happened!! My car was locked. He "jimmied" the lock to get in. This is MY stuff. I worked for it. "He" wound up paying for it!!! That's where the "Don't mess with Papa" icon came from. It was my sisters idea after I told her the story.

I would not recommend doing what you did. Now days one does not know if the person is armed or on drugs. What with the ability to use cell phones to take pictures an or video I would take the individuals photo an turn all over to the police. I would prefer charges. You're lucky you did not get hurt.

    Thanks
    Wildman
