what types of files can a regular windows user execute?

If you set your computer users up as only Windows user level users then what
types of applications can they successfully execute? I know a lot of
applications require administrator rights in order to install but it seems
some things even a regular user can install.

The main reason I ask is that I am concerned with regular users potentially
downloading something malicious unknowingly and then executing it.

If things go as planned, software that they are able to install and/or
execute shouldn't be able to affect other users of the machine, or the
system itself. They may be able to execute malware that affects their
    own user space.
