Hi---There has been a Icon on my desk top for some time----it's called HOSTS I think it was left on after the remote agent went on my computer. It was McAFee, who logged off---no good by or I'm finished. I could tell he was having a lot of trouble finding the problem & never did. McAfee won't ever be part of my security ever again. They have been compleaty removed. ( by I think Everything .com---just did it yesterday & can't remember how  )
Anyway---do I need to keep this or remove it----looks like it's a McAfee thing  ? I have no idea what it is------please advise-----& thanks for any help----gunnner ;)

From what you typed it appears that it is a single file not a folder, is that correct? If so does it show a little arrow indicating a shortcut? If it is a file and not a shortcut I would simply delete it to the recycle bin. Just use the computer as normal after that and if you experience no immediate problems after you reboot the machine it was probably just something being used for informational purposes. It seems both harmless and useless and certainly not needed on your desktop.

If it is a shortcut you can safely delete it no matter what its purpose.

LOL I hear you gunnner but lets go a step further. There is a McAfee removal tool that is available to catch the odds and ends it is available directly from McAfee but the link seems not to be working. This is another safe site to get it if you want. http://www.softpedia...oval-Tool.shtml and theses are the instructions they post.
Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
    · Double click the MCPR.exe
    · A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
    · Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
    · After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
    · Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
    · Press Y on the keyboard.
    · Wait for the computer to restart.
    · All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

I don't think they are any better or worse than any of the big AV comapnies. They all want your money and give very little real support in return.....

In rereading your last post, gunnner, I am hoping that when you originally uninstalled McAfee that you did install an antivirus program to replace it. I agree with Hatsoff and have found my experiences with Avast and Avira to be very accpetable. I am also quite happy with eset but do not classify it along with McAfee or Norton despite the fact that it is not free.

    A couple notes here----
First---I did not uninstall mcafee myself----the 2nd remote agent did it cause he could not find the problem I had with it.

When I went on chat with Mc--I was told that I removed them--HUH!!!! OK---was wanting to remove them anyway & knew that was hard to do. They would not refund any $. I contacted them &--- told them to remove me from Auto Renewal---& have the confirmation #.
I have been all over this puta, including the C drive----there is no trace of mcafee that I can find----good riddance

I believe rite after I installed nod 32

If you never had a problem with Mc---then you don't know much about them. Go to McAfee support forums, if I remember there was many problems there.

&--BTW--on another forum They all said it (mcafee) was trash---gunnner
