I have a 750gb external wd hd. Last week it just stopped popping up in my computer and I wasn't able to access it anymore. It used to show up under eject hardware as "wd elements" and now it just shows up as "hdd". I have tried going storage--> disc management but it will not show up there. I have also tried hooking it up to another computer to no avail. If anyone can tell me how to get my data off of it or if it is even possible I would be most appreciative.

Hi nayyr, and welcome to Computer Help Forums.

Are you able to right click on "hdd" and select Properties? If you are, then do just that and select the Tools tab. Under Error checking, click Check now. You will see 2 boxes in the window...place a check mark (Tick) in both of them.

Now click Start. (That's Start in that small window)

Follow any instructions given and be patient...the process can take a while.

Please get back to us with any questions and or your findings.

Well now it's just showing up as "usb mass storage device", but the only place I see it is when I go to eject hardware. It doesn't show up under disk management or my computer at all. And I'm not able to get into any sort of properties window with it :(

When the external is hooked up to your computer can you feel any vibration that the hard drive is actually spinning up.?

My advice would be to take the drive out of the enclosure and connect it up with a HDD to USB adapter.
    This eliminates the enclosure electronics.

    Nope :/
I feel a little initial spur of movement, but nothing like when it was fully functioning.

Many HDD External enclosures sold, it's not possible to remove the HDD.
Some are removable. All depends what sort you have.
Have you a Part Number or screen shot?

    Footnote.
It should be noted that in many parts of the world the term External Enclosure means that you have to add your own HDD. And the term External HDD means that that is an already sealed HDD.
