Watch What You Download

Well a simple search for new and different browsers has basically blown out my whole OS (Windows 7 Ultimate). I have tried using image files from earlier dates and sooner or later the whole OS crumbles. Installing programs is prevented, screen blinks on and off requiring "3 finger salute" to get back to stable OS. I am unable to install anything except in Safe Mode, Updates to Quicken 2015 will not install so program is dead. My file and data backup programs will not run and I am running out of bandaids.

This all started with an install of the Comodo Ice Dragon browser, a Mozilla based browser and my failure to create an image file before doing that install. My last try will be now when install an image file from December. Files and data don't matter as they are on a server TG, but if this fails then its time to reinstall Windows.

 

Yeah happened every time I installed something. I could not complete the installs because could not catch anything with the mouse because of the blinking. I am now back to Dec 29th and things seem smooth though Outlook is screwed up..... January image file was toast....Feb one I had already used. The good news is my Handy Backup file and date backup is not working again.

 

That sucks Rich all this unnecessary drama.

I won't go near Comodo.

 

I'm the one that suggested the" Comodo Ice Dragon" browser. I'm still using it without any 'known' problems. Did the problems occur when you tried to uninstall the program? I believe i uninstalled Firefox before installing Comodo Ice Dragon.

 

I said it backwards Cindy this thing has me so pissed off....Handy Backup is now working again is what I meant to say.

N3 when I installed Comodo Ice Dragon, Firefox had already been uninstalled as I was using Pale Moon in place of it. I did not uninstall Pale Mooon right away either but later on I did maybe after a week or two.

The good news is it looks like my December Image File held the key as everything is working fine now except I could not gte Emsisoft installed and I haven't the time to call their tech support which is usually quite responsive so I put in Mse and Mbam without an issue and I am content with that until I have time to attack that issue.

 

Is this the time to talk about putting a good working clone on to a spare hard drive so you can swap drives? or do I go hide in the corner while you explode Rich?

 

Funny Nev but I make image files once a month and I usually do an incremental if I am about to launch some major software install. I just didn't think of this browser as a major software install. Wow was I wrong.
It is hard to believe how many things this screwed up. It also didn't help that the January image file was a disgrace and that is the first time that has ever happened to me.

 

That can be a very good thing. I have a large cache of image files but have gone back to fresh installing for now and likely for a another year or so. Doing a fresh install constantly is a fabulous way to learn and keep in touch with the order of things that need to be installed.

 

I find with a clean install the PC runs at it's best with a clean registry.
I am doing a clean install at the moment. Does take a while to do though.

 

I could not agree more but I just don't have the time right now to do a full clean install. I have been thinking about doing my clean install as a new build when I have more time.

 

My biggest time waster is setting up the backup software to back up the files and data properly.
That takes a few hours all by itself. Unfortunately I cannot allow myself to do that half-assed, I so wish I could!

 

Tony I never use those things, they back up everything including 75% of which is meaningless programs that won't open. Certain programs need more backup than others as their uses are different so I don't want to waste time sifting through all that mess later on when I am looking for a specific file.

 

Good point it gets a little old after a while. Why keep the damn things if we cannot use them?

How can you give a qualified opinion on software you never use?

 

I just looked at it and when you are right you are right the only thing I don't like is it does not offer compression.
