    My external speakers stopped working. I checked them out on another pc and they work fine. I did a windows diagnostic trouble shoot and found a "Problem detected with Intel (R) ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller 293c. Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43). Intel (R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller 2937 is not working properly.
    My os info is below:

    Hi Dave,

    Possibly the driver has somehow become corrupted so try this:

    Click the 'Start' button;
    Open the 'Control Panel';
    Open 'Administrative Tools';
    Open 'Computer Management';
    Open the 'Device Manager' (listed in left pane);
    Expand 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' (listed in the right pane) by clicking the cross;
    Look for the problem device in the new list that appears - it may show an exclamation or question mark symbol to signify a problem;
    Open it by double clicking on it;
    Open the 'Driver' tab in the window that appears;
    You can now uninstall the device by clicking the 'Uninstall' button - if you do this, after you have closed the 'Control Panel', when you reboot your computer Windows should recognize the device and find its driver and reinstall it. Hopefully this will cure the problem.

    Good luck, Kick.

    Thanks Kick for the instructions. I did it, both drivers, my pc went into safe mode directly after I did the display driver so I restarted and it came back to normal. I won't know how the display was affected unless it goes black again but I thinkyou are right I probably overloaded the system at some point.
    The usb is another matter though. I tried the external speakers but they just won't work. I am using Win 7 Starter so whether or not that makes a difference I don't know. However the speakers works on my identical Acer pc my wife uses but her pc uses Win 7 Ultimate. Thanks

    update...I think it's probably my usb port itself because I tried plugging in my mouse at that port and it does not function. Yet, the mouse functions on the usb port on the right side. Maybe I have a hardware problem?

    Hi Dave,

    Check to see if any other usb devices function on the suspect usb port - if nothing else works then, as you say, you probably have a hardware problem.

    The next logical step would be to try the speakers in another usb port if you have a spare (I believe there are 3 usb2 ports on your model) - if you haven't got a spare, then a usb hub may help by allowing a port to be shared. If your speakers have their own power supply the hub should work but if the speakers take their power from the usb directly, you may need a hub with its own power supply.

    Repairing the problematic usb port may be an option but probably not viable if an electronic component has failed - if the problem is caused by physical damage within the socket (e.g. a bent pin or such like), you may be able to rectify that yourself so have a close look and compare the socket with a known good one. (Make sure the computer is not powered up before probing - you don't want to short out anything.)

    I hope you get it sorted. Regards, Kick.

    Yup, that's what I thought. I will take it to my trusty repairman and see what's possible if there are parts available. Thanks Kick.
