I got a call from a guy I know who's very good with computers, but he's run into a problem and asked for help. I suggested he post here, but I guess he's kinda shy.

He has a Sony laptop running Windows 7. The USB drivers uninstall themselves after between 30 and 120 minutes. They go yellow in the Device Manager and then don't work. He uninstalls the USB drivers (2ea). He then goes to Scan for Changes. The USB ports are recognized and start working. Then the cycle repeats - after a period of time, the USB ports stop working and show as yellow in the Device Manager.

Any one have a thought on what in the world is going on?

    Thanks,

Has he checked for a BIOS update on the board?
    What about reinstalling the chipset?

Just so you know, you will have a hard time finding help for someone who doesn't care enough to post in a place that is free to fix his problem and these threads generally go on forever due to third party communication and never solve anything anyway Tony because the user has no "skin in the game" so to speak. That said Cindy is on the right track but the other thing we need is a total hardware description to solve what most likely is a hardware problem.

Add to that, he might also have something faulty plugged in to at least one of the USB ports that could be causing the driver to fail.

    Thanks Cindy, Thanks Nev,

Just thought I'd get back to you on this. He turned off the Sony One Care/Vaio Care application and that fixed the problem. Probably something with a recent update caused a conflict.

Rich - sorry I posted. I'll refrain from posting on someone else behalf in the future.

Thanks for letting us know, Tony.

You can post any problem you want. I think what Rich meant is, it doesn't always work out well but that won't stop us from trying to help.
