Unable to Safely Remove Hardware -- Server 2008 with Hyper-V

Discussion in 'Windows Home Server' started by Stewart Berman, Apr 3, 2009.

  1. Server 2008 With Hyper-V SP1 with all critical updates applied.

I have five SATA drives -- two of which are in exposed 5 1/4" slots and are removable. One of the
drives does not have a drive letter assigned to it. The Safely Remove Hardware icon is not in the
    tray. If I run:

    C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

It opens an empty window -- no removable drives are shown.

Is this a known Server 2008 bug?

  2. Anybody?

  3. Stewart,
What do you mean when you say two of the drives are "removable"? Are you
trying to remove them while the OS is running, like a USB drive?

  4. On my XP Pro SP3 system all of my SATA drives show up in Safely Remove Hardware.

On my Server 2008 with Hyper-V none of my SATA drives show up in Safely Remove Hardware.

The XP system has one ADDONICS AESNAPMRSA SNAP-IN SATA MOBILE RACK - STORAGE ENCLOSURE. The Server
system has two. These allow me to plug in or remove a SATA drive while the system is running.

On the XP system I simply select the drive in the Safely Remove Hardware window and press Stop then
press OK and I can remove the drive.

The Server 2008 system does not show the SATA drives as removable. If I connect a USB drive it does
    show as removable.

The SATA drives on the Server should be hot swappable but they are not. Do you know if there is a
    hot fix for his?

    Solution: 1: Update windows.
2: Restart the computer and check it again.
3: If face still problem then scan with spyware removal and
    trojon removal tool.
4: Restart the computer and check again.

Thanks but the system has all critical and important updates as well as antivirus and antispyware
running. The machine has been restarted a number of times.

The problem has been there from the day the server was built. It does not recognize SATA drives as
    being demountable.
