We are allowed to bring our laptops to work and surf the internet when it is not busy. We are on a wireless network that is secured with a password. I am not able to connect to the internet anymore via firefox or IE. I have steam and skype installed and I am able to connect to the internet with both of those programs and use their chat programs.

I have no idea why I cannot get on the internet with firefox or IE and it is driving me nuts.

Both of my laptops have done this now. I was dowloading a game via steam and tried to play it and right after or it appeared anyway I was not able to get online. My other laptop I was checking out the free everquest mmorpg game and poof, the same thing.

Did I trigger something by installing those games? I am able to play other games with no problems. In my line of work before anyone says anything I have a lot of downtime. No need to discuss that any further, lol

I am not sure what to do. I am using the free version of avg as well if that makes a difference.

I have tried pulling out the ethernet line to the router and nothing. My partners can get on with their laptops. I have not hit the reset button because I am not authorized and I am not sure what would happen to the router when that is done.

I think your best course of action would be to talk to someone who is authorised to 'mess' with the works network. if we need to check any of the network settings your not going to have the permissions or passwords to check or change them. if this were more of a global problem where you were having problems on any network whether it be a free open one in a restaurant, Hotel or your home network, then it would probably indicate you had a setting problem on your laptop, as you describe it as being local to your works network then that's where the problem is most likely to be.

Without the necessary passwords and permissions were just going to keep running into 'brick walls' and go now where fast. if it were a router reset problem the chances are you wouldn't be the only one with problems and so an IT guy would appear or should appear to sort it out, if your doing something that is against company policy but happens anyway it might be worth going through the trouble of getting friendly with one of the IT guys.

after saying all that, one of our tech's here may well know of a couple of things you can try. so it may well be worth keeping an eye on this thread for any idea's that may be put forward.

If all is above board then I am sure your IT guy would have the answers for you.
I want a job like you have.

Sounds like a DNS issue. Can other people get on the Internet using their own computers?
