I am having a heck of a time trying to access files from my Windows 7 based PC with my Windows XP laptop via my home network. I hope someone is able to help me overcome my barriers. I'd like to be able to share "My Videos", "My Music" etc from my Windows 7 machine with my Windows XP laptop.

On my Windows 7, I have created a home network, and assigned a homegroup. Network discovery is on, file and printer sharing is on, public folder sharing is on, media streaming is on, 128bit encryption on, password protected sharing off, and allow Windows to manage homegroup connections is on.

On my Widows 7 machine, I can see both my PC and laptop in the "Network" with their unqiue names. I can access the shared folders of my laptop on my Windows 7 PC.

On my XP laptop ... I can also see both computers in my workgroup. I can access my Windows 7 PC, nut it only allows me access to >USERS>PUBLIC>VIDEOS etc.

Through Windows Explorer on my Window 7 PC, I accessed my my PC network computer, I saw the folder USERS. I opened it and found PUBLIC and MAX. I figured maybe I need to share folder MAX, so select max, right click, select share with. A lock is displayed next to "Nobody". I suppose I need to share with Homegroup (Read/Write). I select it. Nothing changes.
From the share with menu for MAX, I select "specific people". From the dropdown, I choose "Homegroup", then add. I give it Read/Write permissions. I hit the "Share" button, and windows processes the sharing of items.

I go to my laptop, and MAX is not available to be accessed. Only PUBLIC. Meanwhile, back at the Windows 7 PC, I notice that MAX is no longer shared. What I did above is gone.

What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to share these folders?

Sounds like you can 'see' the XP machine from your W7 machine. However, you can't get into any of the XP folders except the Public folder.

On the XP machine, you need to turn on File Sharing. Then right click the folder you want to share on the XP machine, go Sharing and Security. If that doesn't show up, go to Properties and select the Sharing tab. Then share the folder with Everyone.

See if this is of any help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040.
