    Hi All,

at the moment we cannot log on to the exchange server even safe mode. since
it is hanging at Apply computer setting
How can I turn this service off outside the OS so that I can log on the
    server?
Any help would be much appreciated

    Regards

You can from the recovery console.

    DISABLE
    disable servicename
Use this command to disable a Windows system service or a driver. In the
command syntax, servicename specifies the name of the service or driver that
    you want to disable.

Use the listsvc command to display all services or drivers that are eligible
to be disabled. The disable command prints the old start type of the service
before resetting the start type to SERVICE_DISABLED. Record the old start
type if you must enable the service again.

The disable command displays the following start_type values:
    SERVICE_DISABLED
    SERVICE_BOOT_START
    SERVICE_SYSTEM_START
    SERVICE_AUTO_START
    SERVICE_DEMAND_START

First, what operating system? Windows, 2000, 2003, 2008, SBS?

Is this Exchange server also a domain controller?

Did it ever blue screen? If so, do you remember the error code and filename
    it blew up on?

If the server is not coming up, even in safe mode, then there is an obvious
problem with the server, no matter what application or service is installed.
If happening in safe mode, then it's more serious. I assume you mean Safe
    Mode without networking?

Have you tried the recovery console?

What was the last thing you remember prior to this happening? Was an app
installed, a hotfix applied, did Windows update run, something changed,
network settings, registry, a service disabled, or anything you remember
    prior to this occuring?

If the server will come up part way, see if you can go to another machine in
normal mode, open computer management, and try to connect to this machine.
If you are able to connect, take a look at the Event logs and post any
EventID# and Source Names for the errors you see.

Also if you are able to connect this way, you will also have access to
Service. BUT please don't disable any services just yet. If you disable
something, you may render the machine useless and will be a little more
difficult to fix, if at all possible. Let's take a look at the facts first.

Do you know the ipconfig of the machine? If so, please post that, too. That
    will greatly help, too.

    Hi Ace And Dave.

    thanks for the help.

it is wins 2003 R2, not a DC.

it is only hanging at Applying computing setting. Not a blue screen.
I suspect the Exchange info store service is the cause. Because before I
restarted the server, I could not restart this service -- it failed.

I have not been able to get into Recovery console. First I need a RAID
driver for this server, second I don't have a RC password for this server.
at the moment, I can ping this server, even access to shared files on this
    server.
how can I change this RC password via another server say DC) ?

    Thanks and Regards

Dave gave you a nice link to reset the local admin password.

As for Exchange services, I am very surprised that it is not going into Safe
Mode. This is not caused by Exchange. Exchange is just another app with a
bunch of services running. Safe Mode does not run non-required services.
It's designed to allow you to get into a machine to disable or fix services
that are causing problems in normal mode.

You have to figure out first why you can't get into safe mode. Maybe an
operating system re-install in Upgrade mode. It will preserve all installed
    apps and settings.

My feeling is that this may have been a virus or some other nasty causing
    it.

first of all, thank you Dave and Ace very and very much without your help, I
would not still be working here [IMG].

In regards to Safe mode, it was not about the issue, I am able to get into
    the Safe mode now.

The issue was that all Exchange services somehow could not start they all
were in status "starting" that is why it was hung at "Applying computer
    setting...".
With your help Ace, I was able to connect that computer via computer
management in order to disable them.
And now I am able to log on that server, and troulbeshoot what happened.

Much appreciated your great help both of you.

    Regards

    Hi VDZ,

Good to hear. And I;m happy to have been of help!

Curious, what was the problem with Exchange? We can help with that, too.
Remember, post an ipconfig /all, and eventID errors, too, please!
