TS Licensing unable to assign permanent CALs

Hi there,

A bit of a backgrounder:

I'm running Hyper-V on my SBS box, and have Win Server 08 running
virtualized. The virtual server was joined to the domain as a domain
computer and is in the Terminal Server Computers AD group. I set up the
server in order to use TS Remote Apps. I installed TS Remote Apps before I
had my CALs and was running it in the "grace period" mode.

Now the issue:

After installing the TS CALs, I noticed in Terminal Server Configuration
that I still had 5 CALs available, despite having 2 users connect. In TS
Licensing, the report that was generated today showed that 2 of the 5 CALs
were in use, but none of them seem to be issuing as permanent CALs.

In conclusion:

I'm trying to figure out why the server keeps issuing temporary CALs. From
what I can see, it doesn't seem to have much of an effect in that the CALs
renew every 2 months, but I would like to resolve this.

Hi Silvia,

The license server and terminal server are running on the same virtual Win
Server 08 box (it's a domain computer, not a DC), while TS Gateway is
running SBS 08 (which serves as the DC). I forgot to mention, the CAL
licensing is set to per user.

I've also been having TS Gateway problems as well, such that "Connect to..."
in RWW does not allow for a connection to listed computers.

Hi Michael,

In Per User licensing, there is no concept of Temporary and Permanent. Its'
only in Per Device.
For Per User license request, the first connection gives the Permanent CAL.

Where did you check that your CALs are temporary ones and not Permanent?
Did you generate the report? Or in the TS Licensing Manager UI?
Can you please tell us what is the exact text you see there and at what
position?

Hi Silvia,

Thanks, that certainly clarifies things.

In TS licensing manager, the report generated shows that 2 of 5 CALs are
being used, whereas in Terminal Services Config, the licensing diagnosis
shows 5 of 5 are still available.

I wasn't sure whether the CALs issued were permanent or not. I just made the
assumption that since the Config window still showed 5 of 5, they must've
been temporary.
