Hey all. I have a Win 7 64bit Toshiba Satellitte L555 17.3" laptop. I went to turn it on today to use it and it turned on fine, but the screen is black. Its black but has some gray light around it. This has happened before, and I brought it to be repaired at a computer shop and they said that laptop screen was simply shut off and they turned it back on. Im not sure what that ment. The only thing I can think that ment was the external screen option was turned on. I have tired pressing FN f5 which chances the type of screen your using. (external, 2 screens, just laptop, and external+laptop at the same time) But anyway, Ive tried messing with them, and none has turned the laptop screen back on. Right now, I do have an external screen hooked up to it, and its working fine. And as far as I know, the computer wasnt dropped or anything. I justed used it a few days ago. (2-3) And like I said, this exect same thing happened about a year ago.

Any ideas?? Thanks for the help in advance

    -John

Ok edit.. About the time I posted, the screen started to apear. Its like shuttering. Almost like something is close..The folding hinge is kinda loose, like the screen has about an inch of play in it, at any position. Which is what the computer repair place did to it. I never did complane becasue it was never really a problem. So maybe finally something got loose.

I might be able to take it apart, if someone can give me detailed directions and/or a video on how to do it..

    thanks

Hi John. I would wait for expert advice first before dismantling the Laptop Screen.

Here is a Video Tutorial if needed at a later date.

It maybe the cable that is plugged into the motherboard that has come loose, the screen cable to the motherboard is usually near one of the hinges of the screen so if the hinge is loose as you say it may have caught the wires, they are quite fragile, but this would involve dismantling quite a lot of the laptop certainly the keyboard and more than likely the bottom casing first as that is usually fastened to the keyboard.

Either route your looking at a reasonably challenging dismantling task to check both ends of the screen cable (probably best to look at screen first), it's up to you whether you try yourself or take it for repair again. If you do dismantle it yourself do be careful as the cables connecting the different parts are neither cheap nor easy to come by in some cases as the average person generally has no need for them so companies don't usually supply spares.

Hi, further to the good advice so far, if you do decide to give it a try and dismantle it yourself, there is an excellent site I know of aimed at all types of laptop dismantling and repairs with very good write ups on how to do it, have a look here

    http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/category/lcd-screen-repair/

Have a good look round that guys site for information regarding general dismantling as well.

Glad to see it sorted out. When you said that you had "play" at the connection I figured that was the cause. That ribbon connection is very touchy and the laptop hinge needs to be reasonably tight or it will happen again.

Is there a video that shows how to make the hinge tight?

In #6 you said it is now working like new.
We presumed the issue was resolved.
I wouldn't know if there was a tutorial.
I would have to google like you.

I think you are picturing a hinge much like one on a door. These laptop parts are designed to fit together to form the case. From what you are now asking it seems that the pressing down that you did was while the laptop was together. There may be a manual for taking the laptop apart but if there is something cracked in the plastic I doubt if there is a replacement hinge alone. The screen and the case should not fit together loosely.

You can look here but I am not sure there is anything that will help you repair a broken case if that is the problem, http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-L555-L555D-L550-L550D/replace-broken-screen.htm
