Toshiba Satellite Won't Start

My Toshiba Satellite won't start up. I'll get the model number in a few minutes. I've had a lot of problems with it over the 3+ years that i've had it. The problem now is that it wont start. Sometimes, when you go to turn it on, the power light comes on, caps lock and num lock lights flash, then, nothing. Nothing on screen. Nothing. Other times, same thing happens, but the HDD light comes on and stays on. If i put my ear up to the computer, right after you push the power button, the hard drive makes an odd sound, then no sounds. But the weirdest part of all, is that the hard drive works. I pluged it in via a usb adapter to the computer i'm on right now, and i could access my files. But the first time i plugged it in, i could get to everything but my desktop folder and downloads folder. Ejected, pluged it back in, and i had access to everything, and backed up the files that weren't already backed up. I need some suggestions to try so i can get it back on. I don't really have the money to go to some computer place and have them charge me 200$ for a 5 minute job or something like that. Any suggestions or things to try would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and i would just like to point out, my warranty plan ended a few months ago -____-

First thing that comes to mind is the PSU.

 

Power supply unit? How would i check that?

You really have to get the PSU tested to eliminate it as a possibility.

 

OH! i forgot to mention. This happened before. Twice. The first time, i turned my computer on and off like 2 or 3 times and it fixed it. The second time, it cut out while it was on, and acted as i described above. Then i had to turn it on and off a few times and it worked.

 

Hi I'm very new here and I don't want to step on anyone. Toshiba has a restore back to factory partition. I would need your full model number found on the bottom of your laptop. Some times the back to factory can be obtained by pressing the 0 key while powering on your laptop. You will lose all your data, so back it up. Going back to factory will eliminate all software conflicts. You can test your HD with seatools dos. You can test your memory with memtest86. These are ISO files that will need to be burned to a CD. They do not need a working operating system. You best bet is to register on the Toshiba forum. You have made me expose myself here. I was banned from Toshiba forum because I argued with a teenager. I wish I wasn't so danged honest. There are some very good and smart people here on this forum, but your best bet is to register on Toshiba Forum. Even though I feel betrayed by Toshiba; this is my advise to you! I wish you the best!

Hi Sherman, this I assume is the same laptop from January, and from that thread it was repaired with a new motherboard. There should have been some form of warranty on the repair alone and if it is a twelve month one you could still be in luck, Check all the paperwork from that last repair first.
AS DSTM suggested though it may be a power problem, does the battery charge and can it be run without the power block plugged in?
Next thing to try is remove the battery and see if it will run on just the power block.

Lets try the simple things first before trying a re-install or a hard drive check.

Hi! You can use the Command Prompt in the system recovery tool (WinRE above) to check your HD and repair damaged sectors.. Type chkdsk /R
If none of these tools work, you may be looking at a back to factory restore. That would eliminate software problems. Sounds like you are having a lot of problems with your Toshiba. I have a L775D-S7222 Satellite for three years and very little trouble with it.

The power supply on a Toshiba lap top is the AC adapter. Can be checked with a multi meter. Should read 12 Volts DC. Could still be bad if not under load, but not likely. The power jack on the Toshiba lap top has been a big problem in the past. It's hard to help when you don't reply back

Hi DSTM! Thank you! Had a senior moment. It is very easy to test. If there is a Staples store near you, they will test it for you if you don't have a muli-meter. Also Toshiba's are notorious for having a bad power switch. Some times it's just a bad connection, but some dis-assembly is required. I would like to ask the OP if they can get into safe modeF8 or the BIOS F2. I never understand why people come on forums and ask for help and then never reply
