Hi, if happy that power cord, and battery are OK, the only other likely option could be the power management chips which will be on the motherboard. Did the owner report any flicker, drop outs, or similar indications of momentary power failures?
If not, you can only replace the drive, send the duff one back under warranty and hope for the best. (The manufacturers may provide a report on it if asked)

Were the battery and the power cord that were purchased, after market brands?

    IMHO, Seagate HDD are trash.

There is your answer. Look carefully at the drive when you take it out. If it's oem then you can't get a replacement except from mfgr which will never happen because you didn't buy it from them, he bought it from a third party so all warranties are dead. But also look carefully on the label and see if it says "recertified". A recertified US drive is nonsense as we do not make a single thing for a computer in this country and I really doubt it went back to Thailand to be fixed. Therefore recertified means someone took the cover off and blew the dust out before shipping to you. Buy only WD. They fail sometimes but not nearly as often. Lately Toshiba/Hitachi drives seem to be rated the best on frequency of repair as well.

Good point also, Cindy. Were the battery and power cord replacement parts or genuine Toshiba parts. Replacement universal cords are "the kiss of death" and replacement or "compatible" batteries equally poor. A new battery should give you 4 hours not 2 if its genuine, so I think we have our answer here without waiting. The power cord and battery are also probably eBay and I would be the last person to knock eBay, but compatibles on eBay, no siree!

No mentioned of "recertified" on the drive, shows "Made in CN". Not understanding the warranty issue since "Retailers" sell their items and you get full warranty or are you referring to Ebay sellers being thrid party so they purchase from retailers then resell so no warranty in that situation? But what if the ebay seller purchases from a wholesaler and so no difference between then and a retailer like Bestbuy?

Ebayers often sell oem drives and even if new they are returnable only to the oem maker, not the manufacturer and they don't know you so you will never get it returned.

Don't mean to nitpick here Rich, I just want to have a clear understanding of this warranty issue because anyone needing a part always ask me "where to purchase" so for future references I would like to give them accurate info so please tell me, what's the difference between OEM and the manufacturer?

Oh wait a minute, I am guess OEM in this case would be that ebay sellers will sell a HDD which came with a pc like from a Dell pc so that defective drive if new can only be returned to Dell but not the HDD manufacturer, is this the situation? If yes, how would a person know if that drive cam from inside a pc or the manufacturer?

Also Cindy, just spoke to the owner and to answer your question he said both replacement battery and power cord purchased were original purchased from Ebay surplus store.
He also said that the ebay ad shows he has 3 years warranty on the HDD from the manufacturer but the seller will accept return without any issues.

Correct mike. The label of the drive will say and suggest you, contact the oem with problems. Again to repeat you buy an oem drive from someone on eBay. The drive indicates it is oem for Dell computers. So even though it is a WD drive, WD will not take it back, you need to return it to Dell who will go "we don't know you!"

OK again if the store sold him HP labeled battery and power cord well fine if not and its compatible with HP then neither is probably any good. There are 4 things you never buy compatibles for. Laptop battery and power cord, and printer drums and cartridges as what is sold sooner or later will destroy the original product. Now if you are a devotee of refilled or generic printer cartridges don't bother to tell me how its the same. It isn't and I can show you the difference and when you try to thwart the printer maker from making money you will take it in the shorts sooner or later because printer makers make no money on printers. The only money they make is on ink, now see why I say that?

If they say they will take the drive back then great as that is the best way out but we still are wanting to know whether the drive was a bad one, or the power cord killed it. Remember the power cord acts for a laptop like the psu does in a desktop where it provides power to all the parts and when that is uneven or poor flow, all the parts suffer!

I don't know about residential printers but I do know that a lot of commercial or business printer owners have been using substitute cartridges for a long time now and they do regular cleaning and change printheads whenever needed and no problems.

Mike ok so you know it's retail but there should be a date of mfgr on it and you can check warranty going to the site and doing warranty check. Seagate has a date cide but you can google "seagate hard drive date code" and get the actual date that way.

Business is another world and the units actually make money on sales and the parts are way better quality. The problems with the residential ink jets is quite frankly they are crap and various versions of crap. That is olne of the reasons I use all lasers for my office but am forced to use inkjets to print photos but that is all I use those for.

Seems continuous ink supply systems are what businesses are turning to nowadays.
