Hi everybody...

I asked this question in July and thought I had an answer. Now I'm not sure.

Whenever I create a document or write a post, pieces of the text insert themselves back into the body of the composition as I type. It happens on at least every other sentence and is annoying and time consuming to edit.

Beeceebee and others suggested that I might be inadvertently hitting some hot keys as I type on my laptop. I've been very careful, now, to type very precisely and not touch anything but the keys I need to use. Even so, the problem continues

It is a used laptop so I don't know what hot keys hot keys may be set up. Is there some way I can eliminate these? I'm a novice and don't want any. Maybe my laptop keyboard is just very sensitive.

But also I would like to try a word processing program other than MS Word and see if that helps.
Can I unistall MS Word? If so, how? Can I get rid of ALL of it? (I have the disk should I decide to re-install) I thought I might try Open Office which is free, works with Windows, has a word processing program and supposedly does everything MS Office does. If I have the same problem with it, I will know it is my computer....or ME! Do you have any other suggestions?

I remember you now :), when you say insert, I take it you mean that something you have just typed, takes it upon itself to move somewhere else in the text, like three or four lines up? and at a guess it would be when you use a full stop or comma,

Yes you can uninstall it quite easily, however unless your low on Hard disk space, why not just install open office then after trying it, uninstall the one you no longer require?

but as you have asked to just remove Microsoft Word, you will have to follow the steps below for Microsoft office

To change a program, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
2. In the Currently installed programs box, click the program that you want to remove, and then click Change or Change/Remove.
3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to make the changes that you want.

However If you decide you want to remove Microsoft Office totally, you need to follow these steps

How to remove an installed program
To remove a program that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
2. In the Currently installed programs box, click the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
3. If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.

But depending on what copy of microsoft office you have if you decide to re install then you will have to wait for it to update before you can use it, and then it will update some more,

Hello Dosmo. I very much agree with what Match says there.

Just to add a bit from my personal experience, I encountered the same problem some weeks back. I was probably a bit infected at that time though I am not sure if that is the cause of the problem.

Try and run through the standard malware removal procedure listed here and see if it makes things better. Malware is known to cause some really weird stuff!

Hope that helps. :)

Just as a followup to Goku's post the following is a good basic malware removal process. Be patient and do it when you have some time to let a few scans run.
Please Note
Due to the nature of Malware removal we recommend that all files are backed up before beginning the Malware removal process.

We also advise that all passwords and user names be written down, as this procedure will most likely erase them from your browser history
,

The applications used in this procedure are available under the freeware licences. While we acknowledge that there are better PAID programs, this procedure will remove 99% of known Malware.

Step One
[IMG] Temporary File Cleaning
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. and save it to your Desktop or other location where you can find it. [IMG]

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
This will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. please move them to a different directory first.

Notes for Windows Vista users:
On Windows Vista that "Windows Temp" is disabled, to empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator"
Prefetch has been disabled on Windows Vista. As Atribune are not sure the effects that emptying prefetch on Windows Vista will have for the time being it won't enable that function.

Step Two
[IMG] Spyware Removal

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your Desktop or other location where you can find it [IMG]

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

• Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish .

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan , then click Scan .
When the scan is complete, click OK , then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Any Malware applications should now be gone.

Step Three

[IMG]Virus Removal

Please note that the eset online scanner only works with Internet Explorer
Click the symbol at the end of this line to take you to the eset online scanner [IMG]

1. Click the check box to “ YES, I accept the terms of use”
2. Click the Yellow information bar at the top of the window to install esetonlinescanner.cab
3. Click the START Button , to goto the “Welcome to the ESET online scanner screen” and Click the START Button again
4. On the “Computer scan” page , click both check boxes for Remove found threats , and Scan unwanted applications , and click the SCAN Button

Please note this scan may take a while to complete

Step Four

Setting a Restore point

[IMG]Windows XP

1. Click Start and Point to All Programs, then Point to Accessories, and Point to System Tools.
2. Click System Restore.
3. Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
4. In the Restore point description box, type a name to identify this restore point, System Restore automatically adds the date and time that this Restore Point is created.
5. To finish creating this restore point, click Create.

To view this restore point, from the Welcome to System Restore screen of the System Restore Wizard select Restore my computer to an earlier time. Then select the date you created the restore point from the calendar in the Select a Restore Point screen. All of the restore points you created and your computer created on the selected date are listed by name in the list box to the right of the calendar.

To cancel and exit the System Restore Wizard, click Cancel.

[IMG] Windows Vista

1. Open System by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
[*]In the left pane, click System Protection If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
[*]Click the System Protection tab, and then click Create.

Match, Gok and BeeCeeBee ,

I followed the procedure for locating malware. The Computer came up almost clean. I already had Malwarebytes, Anti-Malware installed, but was glad to know about ATF cleaner! My AVAST virus must be working well, too. Anyway, I repaired the few problems I found, but that that didn't help my wandering bits of text.

Then, I installed OpenOffice and viola! Everything stays right where I type it! :jump:
But now my question is, how do I force the computer to accept OpenOffice as my default in place of MS Office? I can't remember how to change defaults, but have a sneaky suspicion that MS Windows won't like this change. I read the OO "read me", but it didn't tell me what I need to know.

Your advice has been so helpful. Can you give me some instructions for this?
Thanx :) Dosmo67

LOL your Link Dont Work For me Goku if you PM it I'll add it for you ;)

The easiest method is to simply right click on a file that you want to open. Select 'Open With', then 'Choose Program'.

From the dialog box that pops up select the program you want to make the default application. You should be able to find it, but if you can't you can press 'Browse' and search for the program's main executable file.

Hi Match!

Your instuctions, below, SOUND simple, but I'm self-taught on the computer (they weren't around when I was young) and there are a lot of basic things I don't know, because I've never needed them, I guess.

You say >>>>The easiest method is to simply right click on a file that you want to open. Select 'Open With', then 'Choose Program'.

I have IE and Windows XP Home. Where do I go to find the file I need to open? What will it be called? I want to replace MS Word 2007 (or whatever program processes my e-mails, forum posts etc.) and replace it
with Open Office which I have installed.

Thanks for your help and patience!:angl:

Hi, Match
Just want to thank you for helping me make Open Office my default word- processing program. I learned some valuable things from you and BeeCeeBee
that I never knew before. I've kept your advice on file for further reference.

My old laptop is getting so erratic and out of control, in lots of ways now...
just brings up old web pages for no good reason when I'm trying to do write e-mails etc. Ever heard of that before? It's like it's possessed!!

Anyway, I've ordered a new desktop all-in-one computer...not that much different from a lap-top really, except the keyboard is separate and has a better design. I won't be as likely to hit wrong keys, maybe. We will see how that one does.

Hope you have a lovely Autumn, wherever you are! In S. Texas we still have had no daytime temps lower than the nineties for months.
Thanks again for your help. :D

Your Welcome, and I hope that you will pop in when your online to see whats new, and if you have any question no matter what, or how simple or daft it may seem, to how impossibly technical then feel free to ask.

Did you get or are using a USB Keyboard, or the Laptop Keyboard, sounds like you have a Keyboard fault, if you are using the laptop one,

Match -- I now have a new computer with a nice ergonomic keyboard. No problems of any kind now! I gave my laptop to a young friend with nimble fingers. I told her it had "some issues" and might not meet her needs. I'll talk to her soon and see what she says.

It was hard for me to believe I was SO clumsy that I made whole sections of text jump around. Well... I do have trouble using a phone in one hand and a tv remote in the other...modern life is sostressful!

I'll keep looking in on these forums. They are full of good info.
