Terminal Server Question

    Hi,

I want to migrate a 2003 terminal server from one machine to another 2003
machine in a server 2003 domain environment.

Is there some step-by-step documentation on how to do this, such as a
    whitepaper?

    Thanks,
    Taz

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Indeed migrating the license server is part of the process.

But I also want to know how to migrate other things like folder permission
structure and all user settings from the old terminal server to the new one.
Do I use the file server migration tool for this part?

As mentioned, what I need is a complete step-by-step instructions on how to
migrate everything related to 2003 terminal server. This should be in a
proper order, so would I need to migrate user settings over first? Or do I
migrate the license server first and then the user stuff to the new server?

I would also like to use the same IP address as the old server to make
things easier. Shall I use the same host name as the old server aswell?

I hope this explains things a bit clearer.

    Thanks,
    Taz

  3. Hi,

    Sorry for the delayed response.
This is the reply from one of the expert on TS: Christa
The short answer is that he’s going to need to rebuild the server on the new
hardware or use third-party tools since there are no Microsoft tools to grab
the settings and move them to a new piece of hardware. The only settings
that should be on the terminal server itself are the applications. Those
applications are going to need to be reinstalled on the new server. We
recommend that user profiles be stored on another server, not the terminal
server, and that the user have roaming profiles for the most consistent
experience, and if he’s set up the user data like that then he won’t need to
do anything. Using group policies for any software restrictions would also
    help him right now.

He could use a tool to image the server and then put the image on the new
hardware, but this will only work depending on how different the hardware on
the two servers is. His best bet is to keep user data off the terminal
    servers and reinstall.

It’s fine to use the same IP address if the other server isn’t using it.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks
    Silvia

    Hi,

    Thanks for the informative reply.

So as I see it, we could do a terminal server migration in the following
    steps:

    1. install terminal services on new server 2003 machine (same IP address)
    2. install applications
    3. configure terminal services group policies - btw, is there a way to
import the local GP's from the old terminal server?
    4. move licenses to new server
    5. migrate user profiles. What is the best way to achieve this? Can I use MS
File Server Migration tool for this, or do you recommend something else? The
    permission structure also needs migrating.

The above list maybe out of order, or have some steps missing. Please can
you advise on the correct step by step procedure. I am quite new to this
    stuff.

    This is rather urgent [IMG]

    Thanks,
    Taz

  5. Hi,

Please check out the Windows Server 2008 TS Resource Kit for details on how
to set up profiles and how to get the server/apps set up properly.

    Thanks

I also read on the tech arena forums that ADMT can be used to migrate
terminal server local profiles from one server to another.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks,
