Clicking on an attached photo file in an outgoing email produces an unreadable flash-by window instead of a dialogue box for viewing options.

In default programs options, Thunderbird and Windows Photo Gallery both have all their options set.

My same set-up in Vista and 7 machines shows a dialogue box for viewing options, but NIkki's Vista machine gives that flash-by unreadable window I mentioned.

Need some guidance what to check next.

    Thanks!

What are the viewing options set in Thunderbird? Can you view an incoming photo? Do your outgoing photos get received properly by the recipient of the email? Does Windows Photo Gallery function properly for viewing other stored photos?
    Just few questions :)

Shoot! I was waiting for an email reply notice that never arrived.
Thought I had better show up again in person to see what's cooking.
Outgoing photo attachments do arrive OK at their destinations.
    Incoming attachments open OK.
Windows Photo Gallery does open other photos, say from the Pictures Folder, for example.
Viewing options in Thunderbird: attachments "incoming" show in Windows Photo Gallery; "outgoing" shows nothing.
The option in the latter is a ladder to some storage server on the net, of her choosing. (nothing going on there, of course)

She downloaded and installed a clean Tbird 13 to replace the new 13 I had put on there. No joy.
I talked her through that, as we could not get Windows Remote Assistance to function.

Her old OS from May 2012 does open the TBird 12 outgoing attachments (ones at the ready to be sent) .jpegs in Picasa3, as it was set back then. (I saved that OS as a reference boot.)

I Googled for TBird registry entry issues, but found zilch yesterday. Would not mind editing her registry remotely, but nothing to edit so far. I added the very same utility cleaners as I always use, and my attachments show OK.

Am looking to un-install her Tbird, reboot and install 13 again. I have a 14 and 12 that I can send to her, but the version does not matter for my Vista and 7 units.

I would prefer to do an un-install using that tool in Advanced Sytem Care 5 free version. There is a special registry clean-out option called Powerful Scan. Not sure if it would delete her email folder, however, so am reticent about using it. Perhaps a straight un-install using Programs and Features would suffice for starters.

Hi, I don't know if you have seen or heard about this, but Mozilla are to discontinue Thunderbird in the near future, just today found a link to this article on a different forum.

    http://dottech.org/tech-news/73932/bye-bye-thunderbird/

Might just be time to start thinking of an alternative.

I have been using Windows Live Mail for some time now and like it very much. It is very similar to Thunderbird. Some people are turned off by the idea that it is part of the whole Window's Live thing and you do need to create an account. But once Live Mail is up and running you do not have to be logged into Windows Live to use it and it functions like any good mail client when you are not logged in.

In fact I don't think I have logged in to Windows Live in the last year.

I use Windows Live Mail now but out of interest, have tried Thunderbird recently. I feel it might be a little quicker in checking for e-mails and downloading them but will probably stick with WLM even so.

I don't have T.bird installed at present so can't do any tests regarding images. When I used TB as the e-mail program, I kept the 'Slideshow' extension installed for viewing photos. Not a cure for the original problem but maybe a good workaround:

Regarding Mozilla discontinuing Thunderbird. Perhaps it won't die. It could be that someone else will continue development. The same as when Mozilla discontinued development of the Mozilla Suite. It was taken on by a different team and renamed 'SeaMonkey'.

Nice tip, well. I installed the slideshow. Its only made for seeing incoming email attachments. No button available for the outgoings.
No replies at all over on the Thunderbird forums, so yours is appreciated.

I came up with a fix.
    In Thunderbird, click:

    Tools

    Options

    Attachments

    Incoming

    Under .jpeg, select "Always ask"

    OK

    Re-start Thunderbird

Then try the attachment viewing again, and when it asks how to open, say Windows Photo Viewer, and check box “always to this”.
