I tried using SR & received a message that it was unsuccessful. I tried it in safe mode with the same results. I turned it off, rebooted, turned it on again, rebooted & it's still not working correctly. I also tried "System File Checker" (SFC.exe) & it stated no problems. Any suggestions?

Hi Hap2. Are you dual booting by any chance?
The reason I ask is I had dual boot XP and Windows7 and for some reason XP was cancelling Windows7 restore points.

When you say it was unsuccessful, are you getting a message or nothing at all happens or what. Can you make a Restore Point? I noticed on my Windows 8 pcs SR was turned off.
Let's see if your is on. Right click "My Computer" and choose "Properties", then "System Protection" and see if you can "Create a Restore Point" now.
Also when you go to SR you did notice the box at the botto0m where you can check to see more "restore points" right? If yes did you try another point before posting this?

I did try another restore point & 'again' received this message...
"System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.

Can you make a Restore Point Hap where I suggested? Also when you ran SFC did you run it as Administrator? Also some Antivirus programs prevent System restore from working.
I would try making Restore Point with Antivirus disabled and then restore it while disabled.

One of the many posts that I have read, points to the Volume Shadow Copy as being a possible problem with SR. In the services.msc console, try to set it to automatic and another solution is to set it to manual and try again.
Specifically "Control Panel", "Administrative Tools", "Services", "Volume Shadow Copy".

If the above do not help Hap everything I am reading suggests this can happen when Malware is removed...didn't you recently have a problem where Starbuck helped you remove some Malware from your
PC somewhere else? OK I just went and looked and noted you are also using Nod32 and that was over something Adw Cleaner removed so I am also wondering if that could be the culprit as well.
Hopefully by now you have disabled NOd32 and tried again to create and restore a new restore point so we know a little more.

Rich......I uninstalled NOD32 a few weeks ago & by doing so it cleared up my booting problem.
Now i disabled my anti-virus (Avira) & anti spyware programs & still having the restore issue. I also ran SFC as administrator. Will try the Volume Shadow Copy & get back to you.

Can you briefly explain the booting problem that cleared up with Nod32 uninstall Hap? There might be a tie in. BTW are you using Avira Free Hap? If yes have you uninstalled the Avira Search Bar?

Rich.....My past booting problem consisted of BSOD's as well as gray SOD's. Also the screen would freeze. Intermittently things would work if i used safe mode. The system restore problem started in conjunction with my booting problem. I'm presently using Avira Pro...no search bar.

And finally Hap stop anytime anything has worked....next step is download and install D7 from the following site:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/d7.html
Once installed click oln .exe and run this spyare too but run the "Windows Repair" screen.
Put a checkmark in "System Restore" and run this which is a registry fix from known spyware damage and hopefully now you are done.

Well I hope we can avoid reinstall of Windows but registry errors are the ones that eventually cause us to do so when all else fails...don't get upset, these
    are really everyday issues unfortunately.

No Hap because you will put everything back you had anyway and programs other than running in startup will be in no way affected...you know before you do that Hap, jump to the next selection I wrote which is the D7 program. That llooks like a real fix which is what I was looking for for you and that is a wonderful program besides I have just been playing with.

Hap D7 has a registry fix for that problem which is why I want you to try it before anything else. Just install it, open Windows Repairs and put a checkmark in "System Restore" and then run that. I am not looking for you to do anything else with that program now.
