    Hi,

Sorry for non tech question but I did not find a non-tech public group.

I know that w2008R2 just has been released, but how 'official' was the
release date to the MS distributor channels? Here is my cae:

I needed 4 win2008 std server licenses so I ordered them in the
beginning of last month. My distributor asked if I wanted SA or simple
licenses. My budget was limited so I purchased the non-upgrade
licenses, thinking that R2 for 2008 would be as free as R2 for 2003 and
a new major MS Server upgrade was years ahead.

However when I now hear that R2 is released I call my distributor and
ask if I just need to purchase R2 media and upgrade my 4 newly purchased
licenses just as we did for win2003. But no, R2 is considered a new
product, costing the full price as my 2008 licenses purchased less than
    two months ago.

I feel that my supplier should have told me that R2 was in the pipeline
and that I should consider waiting a few weeks to avoid wasting my money
on the 'old' 2008 in this case.

What do you think...? Comments please

    regards jake

  2. Hello Jake,

When 2003 R2 was startes it was NOT free, you had to buy an additional license
    as with 2008 R2 now.

I agree with you that your reseller maybe should have noticed you about the
upcoming version. For some date time line see here.

When reseller get's the official go from MS i can't tell you. But it shouldn't
be like "Hey, tomorrow you'll get 2008 R2".

    Best regards

  3. My company had a similar problem, we needed to replace our servers and
couldn't wait for the release of R2. So we purchased and placed an order
with the same supplier for Server 2008 Ent/TS CAL's (we already had Srv2008
CAL's) on the Open License agreement. When the license details came through
though, to my surprise, they were all for 2008 R2.

I'm now in the process of finishing my new domain complete with 2008 R2
    everything.

    Andrew.
